Default Depo Headlight Modification Questions

Hey guys,

Well lets just start off by saying I used to own a set of the Depo black headlights on a 2001 Coupe, I enjoyed them alot especially with the HIDs I had in them, well that car is dead now, been dead for over a year.

But on the upside of things, I purchased a 2000 FRC and I have painted it Flat Black and got a set of C6Z wheels with a lip and powder coated them to match the car.

The modification im thinking of doing, I know people like to remove the lens and color match them to the car, but since my car is already flat black, as the headlight housings already are, would these headlights be in danger of road hazards or Rain for that matter if I were to just remove the plastic lens?

Any ideas or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Anthony

See thats what I was worried about was Water, but I mean there is another lens on those lights in front of the bulb, the projector lens, but is that dangerous to have exposed?

I just installed painted black Depo's and HID fogs and lows beams this weekend along with new black front turn signal lenses from that auction site and switchback LED bulbs. My paint guy did such an awesome job I swear it looks like my DEPO's are painted on the inside or better yet were molded with black paint! Just find someone who is an artist with a paint gun and put them in their hands.

well there is another reason I wanted to get rid of the covers, it would make the headlights lower, in my opinion, the big lens over everything is ugly and that the interior design of those headlights would look way better if there wasnt a massive lens covering everything, and not to mention cracking on everyone

No idea but Im thinking you wouldnt go through the trouble and expense of sealing them inside a lense if they were ok to be out in the open?

Why not ask Depo?

Hoping someone chimes in. I dont like the Depo look with the big plastic cover but I think they would look much better without the cover

You need the lens to keep the housing weatherproof. If I remember correctly the projectors in the DEPO lights are not sealed. If you get excessive moisture on the HID capsule, it will eventually fail....sometimes explode

So what do you think would be required to make them work without the lense. This should be right up your alley.

You know like the specter werkes exposed headlights. Would it even be worth the expense? Could you make these?

the specter werkes exposed headlight kit is no longer sold. I suspect the reason was because of a lack of weatherproofing.

Hmm, I wonder if just laying fiber glass or filling the hole with resin or epoxy then color matching them would work

how about filling the hole with some clear silicone. Ive never seen them in person so Im not sure what areas would need to be sealed off

See how there are some vented areas under the massive protective lens? maybe fill those in, the clear silicone idea might work if its down inside far enough to where it is not visible.

With all the intelligent people on this forum I am sure we can come up with some sort of solution. The lights would be so much sleaker. Painted to match of course.

I still want to know if this is doable. Maybe I will be the first to try it, unless someone else already has and is going to chime in.

Wonder if you could remove the lens and cover all the exposed areas with something like the 3M invisible bra material.

well I was gonna try it, but I decided to buy other parts first, if I come into the funds and feel like experimenting, I will, but as of right now i've just dropped over 4 grand into my MR2 motor swap.
