Hi everyone,
This is my first post; congratulations on an excellent community! I bought a 99 FRC last winter without a lot of info about previous owners/mods etc. I decided to paint the rear lower valance black (pewter car). The painting went well, but as I removed the 3M auto masking tape (blue), some flakes of shellac looking coating lifted off the original paint. Its pretty obvious, but fortunately in the lower underside of the body. My question is this: could this be the clear coat, or did the previous owner apply some kind of "never wax again" coating? Prior to painting I cleaned the area with 3M wax and adhesive remover. Could this have loosened the clear coat? How might I tell the difference, and what are some suggestions to blend/minimize the appearance? Thanks in advance!
Hmmm that's interesting. The 3m wax remover should in no way have affected your clearcoat. I've never heard of GM putting on some sort of protective coating anywhere on the car either. I would think it would need sanded down and buffed at the least...
You could try posting in the car care products Forum also...

I would not think that the tape would pull up the clear - unless it was already flaking off. You might just want to take it to a good body shop and see what they think it is. Good luck - sure hope the clear was not damaged.
