I just start mine, let it idle long enough for me to put it into 1st gear, and back out. Just drive at a moderate speed until the temperatures start to come up.
I do use a general guideline of not running an engine hard until the oil is at least up to 160.

Default What?

TEXHAWK0 --

I'm just kidding, but how do you put it into first gear and BACK out?

If you come to Austin sometime, let me know and we can meet up.

Some put in 1st and then reverse to avoid the grind from not getting it into gear.

its an engine, nothing special...

My ritual goes something like this:

1. start car
2. let oil pressure come up (only takes a couple seconds)
3. slowly pull outta garage
4. drive easy until oil temps reach 170 (takes 5-20 minutes depending on ambient temps)
5. unleash hell

repeat step 5 as needed.

My car is a daily driver/ track car so I try to be what I consider reasonable. I start, wait only until oil temp starts climbing (maybe a minute), take it easy based on traction/ traffic/ and conditions, then drive normally.

One time I had to floor it getting on the freeway when it was at 100* because I was about to get plowed by a truck. It made me cringe to do it. Otherwise I have always been nice to it. I think I'll start making 160* my point though.

In their Performance Parts catalog,GM says 180 oil temp before hard use. That happens to be what I have used for many years.

I get in, start the engine and then fasten the harness, check to see that I have pressure and then drive away. The oil is synthetic and will lubricate at very low temps, so I just get in and drive. It takes me at least 5 minutes to get to an area where I can stand on it so no worries. got 46k on it and it is a heavy track use car. Pressure runs around 50 hot and 75psi when cold. (I have a Meling pump)

As quick as mine is up and running, mine is moving. I do not get on the car hard when I pull out of the driveway though. I am usually pretty casual about my driving since I live pretty close to town. Then I turn down a back road and drive the 30 miles to work and that is cruise control. Same for when I leave work. As quick as it is running, I am moving.
