Default Rear Lettering

Two questions - first I want to remove the cheap plastic black letters on the rear of my pewter C5 that were there when I got her. Under the letters is a load of gooey stuff. Any suggestions on the easiest and safest way to get the letters and the gunk off?

Second - I haven't committed to what to to next. Once removed I may just leave it bare, but I've also considered new lettering. Any suggestions? Black is really the only color I've seen on pewter but I don't want to have black again. I considered chrome. I like the low contrast that quickly becomes high contrast in bright lights. Has anyone seen chrome lettering on a pewter c5? I'd love to see a pic to see what I'm getting myself in to. I have no other chrome or accessories on my rear end. Any and all input is appreciated!

You can see where my last "e" is lacking...

Goof Off should be able to get it off.

I would try goof off... and I have seen red before on silver or maybe pewter but it looked pretty good...Chrome would look good but I have never been a very big chrome person

polished stainless would be more subdued than chrome

Red matches your tailights, stainless steel would match your tailpipes (and exhaust plate?), your choice.

Careful with Goof Off, I've had it take off paint before.

Goo Gone or even WD-40 should help you get the adhesive off.

IMO, a set of brakelight red rear letters go very well with pewter. Here's a pic of them on my last C5.

Mine had the same cheap stickers on it when I bought my car. I used a pair of tweezers and a blow dryer to get them off. Didn't leave much of the sticky stuff behind when done. Be careful with the blow dryer though and don't get the surface to hot. When the sticker starts to remove easily use the dryer on and off as needed to get the whole sticker off. If there is any residue left from the decal, I used WD-40 then waxed afterwards. Good luck with the removal.

Here is the SS. I have them front and back on my MSG. I love them and I chose the titanium black mirror finish option even though it is a little extra. I think if is more suitable for the silvers and grays where chrome can get lost.

When I removed the body side moldings on my 01 Z I had trouble getting the tape off. There was also a spot that was glued or something...I tried WD-40, Goo be gone, spray adhesive remover, gum out, and brake kleen...nothing worked. I then tried a little Hope's Gun Cleaner on a rag and it took the glue and adhesive right off.

When I purchased my 2000 C5 those letters had been glued in using crazy glue. I wound up replacing the rear bumper cover. It was cheaper then repainting.

Good Luck, Bill

I like the chrome, very subtle on a light colored car.

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions everyone! The pictures are helpful too.

I'm going to start with Goo Gone and see what happens from there. I do have some WD40 and Gun Cleaner so those will be my backups. I can't imagine how these letters were affixed that there is so much goop behind them and yet they are falling off!

Still going back and forth between the chrome and the SS but I suppose that decision can wait until I remove the letters. I'll be sure and let you all know how it turns out! Thanks!
