You need to jack the car up and do some investigating. Look around the transmission area. If its dripping as you pull it in and out, I wouldnt think its the differential. It does sound like the tranny since the fluid inside it is thinner than the differential.

If you look under the car you can see the differential and the tranny. The diff. is the unit that the two black shafts from the wheels are going into. If you see the fluid dripping straight onto the sway bar( the cylinder shaped bar spanning the width of car and is painted black) then it is probably the differential. Also if you can get under the car and only see fluid leaking on one side of the car, then you again its a diff. If you see the a thinner fluid that seems to be leaking in between that rear differential and the longer transmission connected to front of the diff, then you have a tranny seal issue.

I have a tranny seal issue I just noticed the other day. Pretty disappointing because the car only has 13k miles on it. It is so small that I just might leave it alone and get it fixed someday in the future. Mine is leaking at the rear of the tranny at the seal near the drain plug.

Sadly, my 99 with only 23K miles on it has a rear end leak, too. At first it was red transmission fluid (MN6). The local dealership diagnosed the fill plug/drain plug was loose. They replaced the fluid and plug and I was on my way. No more red fluid on the ground.

Now, today, I notice a small spot of darker oil-like fluid on the ground. Not sure yet what the cause is.

Does it smell nasty? Its probably gear oil from the differential. I really wouldnt worry too much about it. My 02Z06 had 15k miles on it and it leaked a bit too. About once a week I would find a nickel to a quarter size drop on the garage floor. I never worried about it.

With the mileage you have, the differential must have the original o ring. They were defective. Om my 02 Z, I went through three oring replacements under warranty until GM came up with the final solution. And that was an aircraft spec oring with some sort of sealant smeared on before installation. It took three replacements before the problem went away. I think you will have a successful replacement if it is done to the last factory spec.

By the way my replacements were at 11 k miles, 15 k miles and 18 k miles. That was 6 years ago. I am the original owner
