Pull the lid towards the driver side while opening to initially get it to open all the way, then oil the hinges. There's four pivot points on either end of the hinge. It will open easily after it is oiled.

The glove box has a dual hinge action to it - you need to use a bit more force when opening it up but it should go to a 90 degree position. Try putting a little lubrication on the hinges - it seems to help.
may not be the case, but if the car has a "cover" on the original lid (my CE has an after market leather padded cover over the standard lid) it might bind a bit trying to open against the brake handle (if the handle is raised). mine does for sure. it takes a bit of extra effort to compress the padded cover a little against the handle to get it to open 90 degrees.

"Apparently the same guy who designed the cup holder did the glove box door."
It could have been a guy who actually did the design, but a woman, Lucy La Hood, Senior
Project Engineer, Interior had a lot to say about the design as well:
"In addition, we had to do a lot of engineering to provide room for the console. The backbone left little room for the console. So, I worked with the Structure Engineer to make sure that we allowed every possible millimeter so that we could fit a phone or tapes inside. We also had placed a restriction on the top to make sure that the console lid wouldn't get to be too high when it was uncomfortable to use as an armrest."
Imho, I agree the ashtray and console design are two of the worst designs I have ever seen in all the cars I've owned. I really miss the look and function of my C4 cupholders.
