Ok, so Im doing a clutch job on my c5 and I wanted to get a little input about removing the clutch. How much clearance am I going to need to remove the input shaft? There probably is no way around the transaxle is there? Thanks for any info
well I broke down and bought the service manuals because you are right, this is an in-depth job. It's just so demoralizing to look at the clutch and then look back at the trans. I'm going to have to tear down the suspension too.
this is good info and great pictures. I don't know if you've seen any of the service manuals, but they are in black and white and sometimes leave out necessary surrounding details. I've got it up on a lift and tools and man power are not an issue. I just don't want to have to remove the trans and tires and suspension and all of that other crap. It's a great design but it would be great if there where a way to somehow get the input shaft to retract enough to allow for pressure plate, driven plate, and flywheel removal.
Ive done several C5 clutch jobs..Yes, you must remove the transaxle..I drop it as an assembly with the torque tube....A lift is nice, but since I dont have one I use tall jack stands and get the car off the floor at least 18 inches....Dont try this task without a helper
yeah, I like working and hanging out with my partners. We just help each other collectively on our rides, so help is not an issue. We all were excited when we pulled the acces. cover off and then it got quiet when we followed the driveline back to the trans. It was real quiet. LOL. its gonna be fun though. something we'll laugh about later i'm sure

I see youre in COS...Im an hour away in Canon City...If it turns out to be more than you can handle give me a holler
Canon City? Sweet action, I see that now. Hey, appreciate the offer and as I said, I'm not sure what's going to happen, but we will definitely learn something! Myself and the two other guys that are working with me are really excited to be doing this. I'll send you a line and let you know how we are doing. If I get hung up on something I'll definitely shoot some questions your way if you don't mind.

No problem...Are you going to replace the flywheel??..What kind of clutch are you going with???...Consider installing a remote bleeder kit for the hydraulic clutch.....These cars are a B*TCH to bleed the clutch without a remote kit..Seriously consider a complete flush of the hydraulic clutch fluid while youre in there.....
BTW, do you have long-tube headers???..Youre gonna wish you didnt if you do..Makes it a royal PITA to get the bell housing off
Be sure not to let the transaxle hang when dropping the assembly..Keep the transaxle/torque tube assembly as level as possible....pull everything BACK...then DOWN...If you drop the transaxle too far with the torque tube engaged in the bell housing it can cause damage!!..I completely remove the rear cradle assembly while supporting the tranny with a jack...Get it out of the way...The cradle can be cumbersome to work with if you leave it attatched to the transaxle..

Initially I was going to use the old one, however when I got a look at it with the acces. cover removed it looked as if it suffered some damage. So yes, I'm getting a kit with a flywheel included. This is not my burn it up and get stupid at the strip ride. It's not driven in a manner that would require a serious load handling application. So in short i'm still looking. I'd like to get a good deal for my money but something that is going to last as well. Everything is still stock, so no long-tubes. I've got plenty of stands so everything should be supported adequately. Back and down, I got it. I can see how this might be problematic if not adhered to.
