I've never been a big believer in the really harsh shift kits. If done wrong they can lock the clutch or band for the next gear before the previous one has released - can't be good on the transmission to momentarily be in 2 gears at the same time.
One spot that can help is making sure the clutch packs and bands are at the low side of their tolerances so that less fluid has to move to engage the gear. Basically, paying attention to the build.
"Slamming" only breaks parts and looses traction. The old mech shift kits only raised main line pressure and changed shift points and quickened shifts. This can all be done with a tune on a modern electronically controlled trans.
will a shift kit "slam" under light throttle/acceleration?
Yep.
Let's say you're stopped in a parking lot. Veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy light throttle. As soon as you hit the shift point, it will SLAM into 2nd.
Parking lots were not fun for that reason - i would be leaving like 2ft of rubber behind every time it would up or downshift (e.g., coming to speedbumps, etc..), and it only got funner when you really got on it

There is a piston with a spring behind it that absorbs the rate of fluid a bit to allow the shift to be softer. In the full on performance kit, that spring is replaced with a metal rod. There is NO cushion. BANG, next gear.
No comment about torque management (I thought that was only in C6s?), but unless you've driven a full out shift kit you can't begin to compare. When it slams into gear it SLAMS into gear. There's NO programming that will mimic that. It will harden the shifts, yes, but there's a big difference between shifts being hardened and SLAMMING into every gear.
Interesting; you're stated experience was not on a C5; but those of us with C5 experience and tranny reprogs are not to be believed
And you think C5's with auto trans don't have TM ????
Like I tried to suggest earlier - there's no need to guess here on CF. There's too many here that have "been there - done that"... and can give exacts and specifics.

Who on earth would want a car that acts like that?
I had a dyno tune on my 2001 auto the shift pressures were increased, and the only time my transmission shifts firmer is at low rpms. At WOT the 1-2nd shift feels much softer than stock. I am considering a shift kit.
