Trying to check the engine oil level on a cooled down car but the dipstick seems to have trailing oil on it and not easy to read. I cleaned the dipstick and tried several tried, but its not crystal clear what the level is.

I've never been able to get an accurate read from my dipstick no matter what way or when I've checked. Its frustrating at best. As a result I'm sure I have more oil in the crankcase than is necessary or recommended but what's a guy to do?
I've tried sanding but didn't do much, maybe I need to sand it more? I'll try anything. But I think the problem is that the dipstick gets wiped by either the tube or the engine block when its removed and not much is going to keep from disturbing the visual oil line if its rubbing the tube or block.
