Default No cats in AZ?

Does anyone know if long tube headers without cats will cause problems passing emmissions in AZ? They're not as strict as CA but.....

Thanks

I had LT headers with cats on my T/A and couldn't pass emissions, but I'm sure that car had other emission issues. I'm not messing with anything like that on the Vette, too much of a hassle. Might check the ACEs web page for more AZ input.

In Arizona - as long as the car has a working Check Engine Light and has no current codes, you'll pass emissions.

If you are going with LT's, why not go with a catted X-pipe and a tune, you'll have no worries.

With cats - you'll run cleaner and you won't have filthy exhaust tips from the untreated emissions.

I recommend Kooks with their catted X-pipe....that's what we sell the most of at Xtreme!

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on a public highway w/o any catalytic converters. Get a high performance system installed. We don't need the air in AZ to look like it used to look in CA.

The AZ Revised State is ARS49-542.G1

Couldn't agree more. I intend to go with hi flow cats, was just wondering if someone could pass w/o any because it seems like a lot of people do just that.

I believe they do physically check for cats with those mirrors in addition to the fuel filler neck, the gas cap and look under the hood for stuff too. I failed once to a faulty gas cap, got a new one from a local store and all was OK.
Plus 96 and newer just get the computer checked for codes, no running on the rollers.

This isn't the answer anyone wants to hear, but the requirement for cats on cars manufactured from 1975 onward is a FEDERAL requirement and applies to all 50 states. Some states don't have emissions inspections (or have very lax ones) and you can "get away with" not having cats because no one is actively checking, but you'd still be violating Federal law by removing them. The few horsepower you'd gain by removing them is more than outweighed by the hassles of always wondering if/when you'll get caught, and having to fool the PCM into thinking they're there. Go with high-flow cats with your LTs and enjoy the cleaner air and no hassles as a result! Emissions requirements are only going to get tougher in the years ahead, so you might as well be ahead of the curve.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Interesting, I guess they don't always check, but they could.

I agree. The Arizona County that I live in does not require emissions testing. But my car has the OEM Z06 X pipe with a B&B Bullet stinger and should pass emissions if ever tested.

It shouldn't be an issue if you're using oem components.

Read the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40, Part 86. If I recall correctly, that outlines the federal requirements for alterations/deletion of emissions control devices on vehicles operated on public highways. It can impose pretty heavy civil fines for owners and vendors.

Unfortunately, I predict every county in AZ will have it in some form eventually. To many people moved/moving here. Once construction starts again, the particulates add to the air quality. The crap in the air doesn't stop at county lines. Prior to the crash, Pinal County experienced one of the largest areas of growth. It would probably be the next logical county to require emissions testing. It was debated as recently as 2008, but nothing got passed.

FYI, unless it's changed some areas of Pinal County (Apache Junction, Maricopa, Queen Creek, Casa Grande) do require emissions testing if the owner/driver commutes into Maricopa County daily for work from their Pinal County primary residence.

You can find information here regarding metro Phoenix (area A) and metro Tucson (area B) and exemptions...
