Default Power steering pump or rack?

As I was turning left into the gas station to fill up, I noticed it the steering got pretty stiff. When I turned it back to the right it felt fine. Fluid level is fine with no leaks or noise. At first I thought it was probably the pump. But why would turning the steering wheel to the right work fine but not to the left? After reading this on the Zip Corvettes site I'm starting to think it may be the rack, and not the pump.

"If your Corvette is experiencing dead spots or grabbing in the steering until the fluid warms up, consider replacing the rack & pinion with a remanufactured unit"

Seems like the pump is working fine if I can turn the steering wheel to the right with no trouble, but not to the left. There seems to be only one output line on the pump-not a left and right output.

Other opinions?

Yes, the pump only has one output line. Your problem sounds like a seal in the rack.

I found a couple of them (rebuilt) for about $200. Not too bad.

Zip Products in Richmond, VA. You can only buy rebuilt or remanufactured units, new one's are no longer available to the best of my knowledge. I have one from Zip in my car now and have had it for a year and 20K miles with no problems.

Yep-that's it-Zip-corvette is where I found it.
I suppose I should go ahead and order it, then drag out the service manual.

Definitely follow the service manual procedure. All the people who have problems seem to be the one's looking for shortcuts. You also will want to pick up a set of these for the power steering pump lines:

I can't find that set online. Can you give me a model # or name of the wrench set?

I don't have the number for that set, it was just a pic I used to show what a crows foot is. If you do a Google search for "crows foot" you'll find a bunch of sets that will work just fine. I don't remember the size you need offhand, maybe someone can chime in. I'm thinking 18 MM but I could be wrong.
