Default Another sewing machine thread

I've read a lot of threads about engine ticking and noise. I haven't exactly found the answer I'm looking for. Car is '01 with 40k. I mostly only hear the rapid ticking noise when I let off the gas while in motion. I don't think I've ever heard it at idle. I really want to remedy this. I haven't tried anything, but I want to look under the valve covers...I just don't know what to check. The car burns some oil and has a Blackwing. Any ideas?

Its almost embarrassing to drive by people in parking lots with the engine sounding so tacky.

Thanks,
Anthony

Hey bro sorry to hear that your having this problem. I really don't know what to tell you since I haven't had this issue on my 01 z. Hopefully you find the answer. People in this forum are the best so I'm sure you will. I've been helped with all the problems I've had. My vette is currently at the dealership. Service column lock again<-- grrrrrr..

I hear some barely audible ticking at idle some of the times (not always). when it is present, it is not loud.

I do have a deceleration rattle that I hear only when the car is warmed up and I let off the gas and while lightly reving...It is not from the engine though.

There's nothing wrong, it's normal. It's valve train noise because of high lift cam. I agree it does sound lousy at times, but there's nothing you can do.

Put a set of long tube headers on it and you won't hear it anymore :-)

That is an odd diagnosis being "in motion". So if you sit with car in neutral and very slowly bring the rpms up to 1500 you don't hear it? Usually with a lifter/rocker noise it's present when it is cold or all the time. An automotive steathascope (?sp?) can be helpful at locating a ticking sound. The injectors can make ticking noises, so don't rule those out...
Almost sounds like a wheel issue with the "in motion" statement.

I had a tick that turned into a lifter roller breaking, so don't believe the guys here that say "it's normal". Hard to diagnose "normal" reading someone's diagnosis online and not hearing it for yourself.

I know that you are dreading me telling you this but, maybe you should take it into dealership and get their opinion. Other than that I know that ticking noise, (possibly piston slap) is fairly normal on 01Zs and some early 02s. Also maybe changing the oil more often with Mobil 1 or a top tier oil would help.

I believe the Singer sewing machine analogy is for the LT1-engine series

Actually in would get worse with LT's, the exhuast would be loud behind the car, but since LT's are much thinner than cast manifolds, if your standing at the engine bay the ticking noise usually gets louder.

People don't want to commit to a specific answer and I understand why but...using a stethascope or a hose to the ear to determine if the "noise" is in multiple places on a warm engine or one single source on one side of the engine. Note hot/cold differences and what is the feel to the engine under load...smooth without misses ? Manifolds been off ? get us a little more info. My '01 has a little rap noise when cold but real quiet warm

I would pull the valve covers off and inspect the rocker arms. The bearing have been known to fall out. Easier, change oil and see if any of the bearing are stuck on the drain plug. Just some thoughts, things I would do.

also check for exhaust leaks. I had a cracked header gasket that was ticking. These motors as stated do make noise.

I prefer a good poly and cotton blend for durability and minimal shrinkage.

Opinions do vary and some machines are incompatable with certain kinds of thread so read your owners manual before purchaching thread.
