I just went through a column lock with my 2002 in a position where a wrecker could not get to it so I had to get the column unlocked. This is how I unlocked it. First, I tried the 10 second wait and of course it did not work. I tried twisting on the wheel with the key in the on position several times to no avail. I then charged the battery to make sure it was as hot as possible, I then disconnected the battery and waited 30 minutes. I reattached the battery turned the key to the on position and twisted the wheel and it unlocked. Once unlocked and after starting the car I turned it off and restarted it to reset the column lock indicator. I hope this helps someone who has the same problem. I have ordered the bypass so hopefully this won't happen again.
Here's another trick to try. When you turn the key, don't start the engine. Turn it to the ON position and wait for the column to unlock, then start the car. When I was having this issue (before I installed the CLB) I noticed that the cranking of the engine stopped my CL from disengaging.
Another hint that I got from a Corvette mechanic was to make sure that you never turn your car off with the wheel turned. Always make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead before turning off the key.
