You can also buy either a factory black plastic surround piece that the license plate fits into or some vendors offer body colored ones that make it a bit more presentable.
I bought the clear plastic "contour" cover from Mid-America, then masked off the center and painted the border on the inside. (Attached it with Velcro for easy cleaning behind it.
I have my plate underneath the opaque cover which is held on by velcro. If stopped, I can remove it right there and the plate is in place. We will have to see if the cop holds of on ticket.

I like the way those look, but in Minnesota, that's the same as driving without a front plate. Nothing can cover the plate, even if it's clear. Ask me how I know...

I like that look, but that won't fly in CT. You will still be ticketed for a "partially obstructed plate". I am running the full clear cover, but pop the factory one on (w/SS inserts) for special occasions.
Oh, do use a magnetic tip screwdriver to put the screws back in...saves some cuss'in.
That looks just great but, it won't fly in MASS either. I'm still looking for the insert that goes around the plate. Don't want to spend $100. if I can get away a little cheaper.
I also got this idea from a previous forum thread (thank you). I was concerned that covering the top would leave me vulnerable to a "partially obscured" problem, so I left the top of the plate more open than Luster did on his. I'm not completely happy with it, but it looks fine and complies with the law.
