I want to do the Ti Mod, I want my Z to have more exhaust sound. If I had the grand to spend on an aftermaket cat back I wouldn't have a problem. But if I had the grand it would go for tires, not exhaust. Ok, I understand now why you really can't remove the stock cat back on jack stands. I found this pic on the web and it says it all. Anyway I've looked at BB, SLP, Corsa, Bassani and all of them have a slip joint between the over the axle pipe and the muffler. Only a couple of aftermarket units have the full length pipe in one piece like the stock cat back. So here's the question, why not cut the stock pipe at the right location so the mufflers can be removed on jack stands and use the correct clamp/splice to reinstall? If I do that then the project can be done in my garage on jack stands. What's everybody think about cutting the stock pipe?
I just did the Ti-mod without a lift. It was no big deal jacking the back up high enough to get the mufflers out. Just make sure the front wheels are chocked well and jack slowly. I guess you could saw the pipes about where the left index finger of the man in the picture is and create a joint there.
I paid $30 to have a shop put my car on a lift and swap my exhaust. Even if you have to pay this two times you have to ask yourself how much your time is worth.
You can very easily do the job at home. Heres how I did it. I backed the car up on my race ramps which puts the wheels 10" off the floor. Be sure to chock the front wheels. At this time you can go ahead and take out the bolts on the flanges and let the pipes hang loose. Because the car is still sitting on the ramps there is no risk of it falling on you while you remove the bolts. I then put my small floor jack on some 8" wooden blocks. Jack the car up now and remove the pipes. You barely have to be under the car and then for only a few minutes. Warning the passenger side is harder to get out than the driver side. As soon as they are out lower the car back down on the ramps.
You didn't have to worry about the front bumper hitting the ground? I know whenever i jack the back up the air dam crushes against the pavement. May be more of a problem for me because my car is lowered.
Either way i plan on removing my borlas and installing the Ti this winter. Just make sure you have something under the car to stop it if for some reason it did fall off the jack. The way you did it sounds fine cause it sounds like my body can for the most part stay out from under the car.
I forget where but there is a pic on here of how high the car must be. 34-46" seems to be the number though.
My only problem is i can't find anyone in the area to do the bypass mod for me!
To the OP...i would not cut exhaust. You would have to weld to to get it correctly again. You can't really make a slip fit there is not enough pipe.

The front air dam was really close but did not touch the floor. No problem with the bumper.
While I spent a long time debating on how to get it off myself, lifting that high is nerve racking to put it mildly. It will make you a little grumpy to see how easily they come off, but it is kinda nice to not worry about dropping the car, scraping the bumper, how to hold it that high, blah blah blah
Now, if you know someone with a kwik lift, you're golden.
I also did my stock removal at home with jackstands, but I wasn't reinstalling it so I was underneath for a real short time. You've got to be real careful and have everything prepared for removal before you jack the rear end up so high. I was able to then lower it to more reasonable levels to install the aftermarket exhaust. I would avoid cutting the pipes unless you plan to junk them, then you've got no problem. They're not worth anything if you wanted to sell them.
I am going to be doing the TI mod soon. Can I ask what size hole did you make in the pipes for the bridge pipe?
Thanks
To the OP, Don't cut your pipes. The Ti is valuble, and you may want to use it someday. As said previously, it's very doable on jackstands; I've done it twice, but I did have the front of the car up about 12'' on stands too. This eases the angle you need on the rear quite a bit. Drop your sway bar too.
To the quote RDC. The examples I've seen have been 1.5-2" diameter Ti tubing, and I would get the bridge pipe before cutting any holes. The bigger the better, but probably not more than 2.25".

From recent experience, the outer diameter of the pipes for the tips is 2" so your bypass can't be any larger than that. Getting a clean seam 2"-2" would be difficult, hence the reason that we used 1.67" to bypass.

I'm planning on removing the mufflers Sunday. I want to check with the welding shop to make sure I can get them back before Thanksgiving. That will give me one day to install and 3 days to drive around.
If you Do not Have Alot Of Expierence With Jacks And Jackstands take it to a Top Notch Muffler Shop that has a Lift for Low Profile Vehicles.
This is the height the back of the car needs to be to get the ti exhaust out in one piece, The front MUST be on Jack Stands otherwise it will Touch the ground !
Not A Great Photo But It Is Difficult To Take A Photo And Hold A Tape Measure At The Same Time.
The "Magic number" is about 34" though in the photo at this angle it appears to be about 36"
My car was mounted In a very safe position at all four corners at all times during the removal process
The stock Ti muffler is too nice a piece to cut so if you can't get it out take it to a "Top Notch" muffler shop
