2000 a4 c5, 60k mi. hear noise from rear, sounds like tires. Noise is constant, just gets higher pitch with acceleration. Doesn't change when turning or letting off gas pedal, or shifting into neutral. Went to tire dealer, he said they were wearing fine. Nitto 555's. Mechanic said axle problem after a 5 min ride. If I put rear on jack stands and no noise would that be a tire problem? Thinking about having shop put other rear wheels on and try. Had differential fluid changed and added additive. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Mines not exactly whisper quiet back there, either.
I'm figuring it's the Kumho runflats(co-worker with 99 Coupe agrees),since it's been the same for the last 7000 miles.
It's not wheel bearings,I checked them when I did the clutch a few weeks ago.
After I get new tires next year (non-runflats) the noise should tone down a bit - if it doesn't,I'll investigate further.
