Codes: Did I do a stupid thing?

Default Codes: Did I do a stupid thing?

I had my check engine light come one and read here how to scroll through the codes. I also saw that they all had an "H" after them (most anyway) which I understand is not a current code, but historical. My INTENTION was to clear the codes so the light would go off and then when it comes on again, only the code(s) that prompted the light would be the ones displayed. Is this incorrect? Have I lost valuable info by doing what I did? I should have asked first, but the light put me in a bit of a panic and I wanted it OFF.

My H codes come back after I clear all codes. Give it a couple days or a few start ups and check your codes again. The H ones will probably be there. I don't know if they ever go away if the problem has been fixed but if you just clear them the H codes will come back but shouldn't put on any warning lights. If a current code was there throwing a code causing a light to be on then if all you did is clear the codes and there really is a problem it will come back too after time. Mine's going through the same thing. I have about five H codes and one C code. I have to check what the C code is and address the problem next time it comes up.

You are ok. No problem if the problem still exists it will generate a new DTC from which you can chase then.

FYI, they will clear off anyway after so many ignition cycles and the problem doesn't reoccur.

LDCM had 6 codes. Not sure what that is all about and foolishly, I did not write them down. That should not prompt a CHECK ENGINE though should it?

Yes the LDCM will set the CEL, Read Bill Curlee's sticky, I had the same problem and your problem could be in the bundle of wires in the door pillar or door. it's a long read but a quick fix. Bill

My guess is you had one or more of these:

B2282 Battery #1 Fault
B2284 Battery #2 Fault
B2286 +5V Reference Fault
U1064 Loss of Communications with BCM
U1096 Loss of Communications with IPC
U1255 Serial Data Line Malfunction

Did you have a battery drain down or be replaced recently? A loss of voltage momentarily on the buss will cause all 6 of these codes. Loss of communication with either computer will generate a Check Engine.

My bet is an intermittent ground problem. Check G105 FIRST. Bill Curlee can hook you up with the ground locations. G105 is a common prob. Located under the engine block on the drivers side! Tightening that one up cured a ton of my woes.

I checked the AIR pump hose by the alternator and it did blow air for a short time and the other side actually had vacuum. It sounded like a pulsing kazoo however. As for the B0361, it has been joined by a 0363. Here is an odd twist. I get cold both sides, heat both sides, hot or cold on either side as I should, BUT, I have both codes and no matter what I set the airflow to (feet, vents, defroster) it evenly comes out of everywhere. I turn the fan up to MAX and the blower sounds like a hairdryer, but very little air is coming out. This is going to make me crazy. I have cleared the codes and they instantly return. I pulled the fuze and replaced it, no difference. Why am I getting a "short to GND" code when the actuator appears to be working AND why would the vacuum leak that it seems is the cause of the "air everywhere" send a code? I pulled the battery that was put in in July when I bought the car and noticed acid damage from a previous battery and two battery tray bolts missing. I pulled the tray out and everything under it looks very normal. Side note, who designed the stupid battery clamps? it broke when I re-attached it. Funky design and very weak. I so cannot afford to deal with this right now. Not with Christmas on top of me and my wife already wishing i did not have the car.

Have you gone through the link above on electrical issues and check the ground pak connectors? That would be the first area to check on the short to ground. Most likely the problem which is probably intermittent.

Sounds like you cranked down pretty good on the hold down bolt. Make sure the lips slips under at the rear of the battery (firewall side) then just snug the hold down bolt so that the battery is not moving. The tray bolts are torqued to 31Nm. The hold down bolt is only 18Nm and the terminal attachments are 15Nm. As you can see snug on the battery terminals and hold down bolt. 15-18Nm is not much force.


DTC B0361: The HVAC control module commands the left air temperature actuator to move by controlling the voltage supplied on the control circuit. A low voltage of 0 volts moves the door toward full hot. 2.5 volts stops the motor, 5 volts moves toward full cold. The instrument panel integration module determines the current position of the actuator by monitoring the voltage on the signal circuit. The feedback potentiometer is a function of the motor position. A high voltage of 4-5 volts indicates full cold door position. A low voltage of less than 1 volt indicates full hot door position. The HVAC control module controls the left air temperature actuator door positions in order to maintain the selected air temperature.

Conditions for setting the DTC. The HVAC control module detects the signal circuit is less than 5 counts (0.09V).

Action taken when the DTC sets: A default value will be used for the sensor data by the HVAC control module in an attempt to maintain the air temperature selected by the driver.

Conditions to clear DTC: Becomes history when the HVAC control module no longer detects the failure, history DTC clears after 100 fault free ignition cycles and cleared manually.

A disconnected or broken door may also set this DTC by allowing the left air temperature actuator to travel to its internal stops. (over travel)

At this point a scan tool is needed to measure voltage while the circuit is in operation.

I would not be surprised if you clean up all the grounds, it may also solve this problem. If after cleaning the grounds it still re-appears, then a full diagnostic is needed so at the very worst the door actuator needs to be replaced. But most steps of the diagnostic are looking for shorts to ground.

If you intend to keep the vehicle, I would invest in a set of Helm factory service manuals.

Oh, B0363 is basically the same DTC.

DTC P0410

A secondary air injection (AIR) pump is used on this vehicle in order to lower the tailpipe emissions during start-up. The powertrain control module (PCM) supplies a ground to the AIR pump relay, which energizes the AIR pump.
The PCM monitors the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltages in order to diagnose the AIR system.
During the AIR test, the PCM activates the AIR pump during closed loop operation. When the AIR is activated, the PCM monitors the HO2S voltages, and monitors the short-term fuel trim values for both banks of the engine. If the AIR system is operating correctly, the HO2S voltages should be low, and the short-term fuel trim should be high.
If the PCM determines that the HO2S voltages for both banks did not respond with the expected results during the tests, DTC P0410 sets. If only 1 sensor responded, the PCM sets either DTC P1415 or DTC P1416. The active DTC indicates which bank has the inoperative AIR system.

Conditions for setting the DTC: If the AIR pump turns ON during a closed loop operation and the HO2S voltage does not fall below 222mV for 1.3 seconds OR if the AIR pump turns ON during a closed loop operation and the short-term fuel trim does not change more than a predetermined amount.

Action taken when the DTC sets: The MIL lamp is turned on (Check Engine), a DTC is stored, the Freeze Frame/Failure Records are stored, the Failure Records are updated after the first failure of each ignition cycle.

It requires a scan tool and a special connector adapter.

Before doing any test be sure any debris is removed from the module connector surfaces and from the module connector gaskets. Gaskets prevent debris from contaminating the module.

Depending on what is found during the diagnostics, it could be a faulty connection, a faulty AIR pump relay or a faulty AIR pump. It could also be a blockage in the vacuum hose or damage to the hose.

Replace the fuse with a NEW fuse.

Very possibly the actuator for the door is defective.

clarification: I was referring to the terminal bolts that are tapered and clamp as the nut is forced in to the wider space in the "egg shaped" hole. I could still wiggle the cable so I gave it another turn and could still wiggle it. I gave it another turn and it split.

After much procrastination, I pulled the battery. No damage to the vacuum lines. I pulled the cover behind the front passenger wheel and the lower fender and checked all vacuum lines. No problems found. I did not take the gas cap posts seriously, but when I could not find any other vacuum issue, I bought a new cap. The old one ratchets WAY too soon by comparison. I have not put the whole car back together yet, but I am crossing my fingers that the cap is the cause.

The car is back together with a new gas cap. No codes yet (only running about 30 minutes) but the heater/AC still blows out of every vent regardless of the setting. I give up. I'll just have to find someone I trust to work on it. What is the Corvettes of Houston reputation for repairs? I have an extened warranty, if they take them. I hate when something does not work right and this is really bugging me.
