Sorry to hear that! You have the dreaded Sulfer build up on the sending unit. Do a search on Fuel Gauge. There is plenty of info there. Some guys add Techron plus to their gas tank. Sometimes it works sometimes not. Usually happens when cheap gas is used, but not always. Try using Techron plus, it may clean the sulfer build up on the sending unit. The sending unit is inside the gas tank. If the chevy dealer puts in new units in both tanks you are looking at about $1500. Hopefully Techron plus or seafoam will fix things for you.
this is a problem with alot of early c5's its simply because of the sulfer content in our gas that basically clogs up the fuel sender. either start (if you dont already) getting gas at either chevron or shell. a bottle of techron or seafoam in your gas tank should cure the problem. worked for me last week along with many others
I had mine replaced and 23 days later it happened again.... Everytime I call the dealer because they replaced mine, we make an appointment and a day or so before the appointment my gauge starts working again... Sometime you need to just drive it around for a week it can correct itself.
Mine was replaced in May at the tune of $900 before I bought the car in July.Still does it every now and then, added a bottle of techron the last time I put gas in it. Seems like it may have helped a little, just have to wait and see.
1. Use a quality fuel system cleaner SeaFoam, Shell V-Power, Techron, Valvoline Synpower
2. change to a better quality fuel www.toptiergas.com
3. if still a problem look for a losse/corroded ground
4. if still a problem change the fuel sending unit
This car has never had nothing but shell v-power in it it only has 45000 miles. I have added 2 bottoles of tectron and drove it around for awhile still does not work. Will the gage start working with out resetting the code?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It takes time for the Tectron to work through and clean the sending unit.
I have the same problem. Mine starts about an hour after the car is running and it's even started working after shutting the car off for a half-hour or so but it always eventually goes belly up. I add a couple of bottles, it works okay for awhile then it starts acting up again. I'd say keep throwing tectron at it.

I had the same problem about 6 years ago. I was using Chevron at the time. The head mechanic at West Coast Corvettes recommended switching to Mobil gas. I did and the gauge has worked fine ever since.
Hope this helps.
IMNSHO,,,It is best to add the Techron when the tank is below 1/2 tank full. Let it set over night at least,,, before filling up. This has worked for me in the past. Good luck.
