I spoke with Nate from Texas Speed Shop today and he was nice enough to explain the different exhaust setups they offer.
I explained to him that I have a 2002 C5 MN6 Coupe and already have a catback and xpipe and wanted to find the most affordable long tube headers.
He said I have two options:
$450 - Header only system
Basically they offer just the headers and I would have to have an exhaust shop custom make something to connect it all up to my xpipe and catback. He wasn't sure what this would cost.
$699 - Header and xpipe system
This would resolve the issue mentioned above. It comes with the LT headers and the connecting pieces, I would remove my pre-existing x-pipe and bolt in their unit.
So I guess the question is, can an exhaust shop make a quality piece (that won't leak) for less than $250 dollars?
I suspect they can, but wanted to get everyone's opinion first. I don't need to spend $1600 dollars on headers that will get me 2 or 3 more hp. I'm not interested in discussing these headers vs others, I'm only interested in learning what method to install the headers would be most cost-effective.
I got the texas speed headers and x pipe used off craigslist for 400. Previous owner had them on for a few months and his HOA, told him his car was too loud and at 4 am he was waking too many neighbors up. After installing the unit I fully understood what they meant, but with my SLP catback, I love it. You will need 2- c02 extenions wiring harness and you need also need to do a minor cut out on the tunnel plate. I would never expect a muffler shop to custom make something that is already fabricated, tested and is a direct bolt on. Spend the extra few bucks and get a grade A one system, trying to save a few bucks generally in the long run can turn out to be regretful. Also if you ever wanted to remove item and sell it when you trade car in you can recoup some of your spendings on mods. A complete bolt on system is easier to unload than a custom mod system by Ernie at Midas.

That's a good point. Approximately how much was everything for the complete system, shipping, and installation?

I had the unit installed at local chevy dealership for 500.00 by their vette mechanic. I had to order the 02 sensor extensions , I beleieve they were about 40.00. I met buyer so there was no shipping involved

Pretty hard to argue with this...all good points. however, it wouldn't hurt to drive over to a few trusted exhaust shops in your area. I would have to think they could make you something decent for the price you mentioned. probably could even make it with flanges that would bolt up to your catback. then, as mentioned above, you could sell it you want. either way, good luck and let us know what you decide to do.
I have a friend that bought the headers and xpipe, but, he's waiting to do all his mods at one time. He said they were pretty nice and thought it was a good deal. Good luck on your choice. I have the Kooks LT's, x pipe and mid pipe. They were on the car when I bought it, they are a bunch more then Texas speed.
