There should be a requirement to install a column lock bypass before you are able to join corvette forum! The very day I picked up my 03 Z06 I ordered mine from corvettes of houston!
I have a CLB and intend to install it, my only concern is that as soon as I opened the directions it says (highlighted in yellow) that this is not a fix!! And it will only work if the car is functioning properly and is to be used as a preventative measure only. If they are putting that on there as a precaution and this will solve my problem then great. I will advise* this weekend when installed.
they mean it will not "fix" an already locked column - but it Will prevent any future lockups.
So if I understand this right. If the column does not lock when the car is turned off ,it was taken care of?
NO!!! All it means is that locking pin does not engage the locking plate. This could be because the CLB is already installed (lucky you) or the locking plate has been removed under ill fated GM fix (sooner or later will fail) which does not work. The only sure way is to physically look and see if the CLB is installed or get a confirmation from previous owner. A GM dealer can also check the vehicle service history to see if the recall has been done in which case don't waste time and order/install CLB.
Negative, I bought a new battery, tried both sets of keys, took care of the bypass under the passenger footwell (where the purple tampered wire was), used the cigarette lighter adapter (even though I have no functioning column lock since back from a dealer visit), and installed the CLB. Main fact is, I can still only go 1.5 miles an hour.
After getting back to the post I just now removed the wiring harness head in the passenger footwell (I didnt know it did not get put back on) and right now the battery is undone so I am waiting. To be honest I am skeptical here, the fuel still shuts off, I cant imagine that unplugging the battery for ten minutes will change that.
Still no good, there is a reputable shop about an hour from here reccomended by Corvette Fever, I am going to have to call them and maybe see what they think, hopefully they can adjust the fuel cut off to 200MPH and solve my problems. I am all out of options, and driving this Jeep Grand Cherokee feels like prison.
I drove my Z for 5 months and then got the CLB on. I agree that c5 owners should be required to provide proof of clb install prior to being able to either register or post new threads.
Some people just like to frustrate themselves. Never had this problem with my car - after less than two months on the forum purchased a CLB and had it installed - STILL HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM -why not just learn from others?
