my C5 automatic transmission is having problems ( help!)
Well today it really sucks for me becasue i think my c5 00' automatic transmission went out... i think???? I was driving on the freeway to work when all of sudden i push the gas pedal at 78mph it will rev up ..... I pulled over and shifted to P. Then Ill shifted to D again but my 1st and 2nd gear worked fine but once it hit 3rd and push the gas pedal the RPM s will go up and it will still moved but hit RPMS. Do u think its the transmission .... i guess im a lucky one.. more when holidays are around the corner.
Well i got a quote over the phone by a transmisson specialist he said $560 normal if i want to put something better $670 thats if I take off the transmission myself an take it to his shop(6 months warranty). If he does all the work its going to be between $1500-1600(1yr warranty). He told me its more time consuming to remove and install back the transmission then fixing it. So is it their any right up on removing the transmission......
It is time for a re-build or a new one from the For Sale section or a good used/proven one
This very same thing happened to mine and it is notorious for the A4's, although mine lasted 90,000 miles and I was pushing 701 RWHP thru it and 582 RWTQ and it did get too hot when it blew!
What I uggest is when you get a different one have a good reputable tuner tune the tranny too - the A4's are really tuneable and that is why mine lasted for so long
If you need more info talk to the fella's at RPM Transmissions - supporting Forum Vendors you can see their site to the right colum here on the forum

Your best bet is to have a shop that knows how to drop the cradle and not leave it up to the customer to bring it in so they can work on it!
It is also best "NOT" to have just any tranny shop do the work - there are a selection of parts that really make the 4l60E a better tranny and done right it will hold huge amounts of power!
You might want to contact RPM Transmissions and order one of theirs for just a little more WHY? Because they are proven and it would only be a little more for their level IV tranny - good for almost 500 RWHP
Please do yourself a favor and save some huge eadaches and take it to someone who knows the Vette and knows the tranny
Call if you need to 661-406-7516
With the RPM tranny you have the choice of removing the tranny yourself or take it to areputable shop and having the "SWAP" done
I'd definitely go with the RPM. I think you're probably looking at 3Gs +\- which ever way you go (RPM or rebuild including R/R labor) for a good high quality job. That would include beefing up all your internals if you rebuild. Did mine about a year ago at 90K, though I rebuilt because I got most of the cost covered under an extended warrantee. Ended up with a level IV for 450.00 out of pocket not including the dyno tune afterwards.
Well since you are in Houston. You could take your Vette to Englandgreen. Stephen put a RPM stage IV tranny in my Vette before he moved to Houston. Good time to upgrade your torque converter too. I had a 2600 stall converter installed. I still have the 2:73 rear gears, but with the new converter she will smoke the tires. Good luck
I Know this prior message was years ago but need some help please!

Matt,
I'm in the Antelope Valley and having problems with my C5 Automatic transmission sticking in 4th gear from time to time. Who do you recommend that is a good Corvette transmission shop? Have you ever seen this type of problem before?

Valerie,
Can you explain what you mean by sticking in 4th?
Is there any other problems that the transmission is experiencing?
Yes I do know of an excellent transmission shop, they built the one for my C5 and if an when the C6's A6 needs one they will do that one.
The first thing I would do is check the transmission fluid level and condition. Has it been seeping, could it be low on fluid?
There is a very specific procedure for checking fluid level, the engine has to be running when the level/ fill plug is removed and stay running until the plug is back in.
An option, if the fluid level is OK, would be to change fluid and filter. There have been some reports in the distant past about defective filters not holding vacuum and therefor not allowing sufficient fluid to get to the transmission.
A good transmission shop should be able to diagnose the transmission, but I am not sure they would be able to pinpoint a defective filter without removing the pan.

Reason: misspelled pinpoint
About 2 years ago I had my trans rebuilt at a performance shop in Sacramento. I ended up reading a vacuum leak code so I parked my car right after. Then then this year I decided to get it out and get it going. I fixed the vacuum leak, But unfortunately my transmission doesn't work right right anymore. It doesn't want to shift from 3 to 4 properly sometimes it does sometimes it it doesn't and sometimes it just winds up the winds up and the throttle revs and then it kicks in to gear real hard. Is there anything that I can do to fix this at home it's just at home? I'm pretty good with mechanical stuff just not transmissions so much. Thanks.

You should probably post this as a separate thread as this one is several years old. What you should have done is take the car back to the shop that did the work when you got the code. Since you parked it, and let it sit for 2 years you'll likely need to pay a shop to look at it.
