I know there's a slew of posts about fobs going bad, but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem to this one. Just after getting my car detailed I noticed that my fob didn't work. I replaced the battery in both fobs and successfully re-trained the RKE system. The problem is, the RKE seems to lose its memory after a few minutes.
I do the "hold down the lock & unlock button" routine and get the single horn beep. After that, I can lock or unlock the car. A few minutes later, the fob fails to work and I have to repeat the "hdtlaub" routine.
In the course of shampooing the rug, could the BCM have gotten wet and in turn make the car act peculiar? The lumbar control motor on the driver seat comes on by itself sometimes since the detailing. I think Christine may have invaded my car.
In the Tech Section, there is a gazzilion threads about the fobs doing exactly what your's is doing. The Fobs appear to have a lifetime as such. They fail. Some people have gotten lucky and resolder a four pin device on the circuit board and it came to life again. Most others, this doesn't work. All you can do is to replace the fob. Gene Culley has the best price around for them that I've seen... www.gmpartshouse.com
The SCM has two connectors at the floor which might have gotten wet therefore causing issues with the seat but shouldn't have anything to do with the FOB. Sure, anything is possible when you're dealing with a computer serial buss interface running throughout the car. Clean those connectors. Also, the seat switch(s) has been known to go bad and cause the seat's compressor to turn on.
I'm going to vote for "something got too wet".
The seat motor issue is important here, I think.
Also, a bad fob (I would think) wouldn't retrain and then stop working agin..
JMHO dry out the car and then see how it goes.
A bad fob will indeed train and then stop, retrain it's ok then stops again. If you do a search, you'll find that is very common on especially 2000 model fobs. I have personally responded to a lot of threads on the 2000 doing exactly what yours is doing. I agree that Gene Culley has the best price around for new fobs.
That's funny, I just went back and looked up your profile. You didn't mention the year in your question and you do have a 2000. I don't know for sure why so many ask for technical help and don't include the year of the car. There are three different fobs for C5's. Order the one for the 2000, it's around $60.
