I've only been in my Z for a couple of months and I could have sworn the dash lights were constantly on, including the mph/kph light. This afternoon, I didn't see it come on until I turned on either the parking or the headlights (mph/kph is always lit up). I'm assuming the dash lights weren't on as much as I'd like to think they were?

Reason: typo
My MPH/KPH has been flickering a little bit as well. Sometimes its really bright, other times it's hardly noticable. Also, even with the headlights on, the section of the speedo around 0 on the MPH gauge hardly lights up. I'm thinking a light has shorted because it's the only section that doesn't light up.
I just ruled it out to age and the fact that it's a GM part. Some come, some go.
The MPH/KPH indicator is always lighted, and changes in intensity based on a light sensor. So you see it changing a lot if you are driving around with different shadows/light in your interior and you're paying attention to it.
The rest of the gauges are not actualy backlit like most gauges; they are painted in a UV paint that glows under blacklight, of which there is one on each side of the instrument cluster. The blacklight is only lit when the parking/headlights are on.
wow, you know, now that I hear it...it makes sense for me also. My car came with a factory tint from the original owner that was insanely dark. That might explain a few things
