I have held back from buying my choice of air cleaners, a Blackwing, because guys and advertisers here always mention haveing to buy an additional adapter to make the Blackwing fit the '01-'02 mass air sensor's diameter. I thought that meant the Blackwing was made to the small size sensor and had to be adapted(restriction) to the larger sensor. WRONG, the Blackwing is the same size as the new larger mass air sensors, its just the supplied fitting is necked down to fit the older, smaller size sensors. With the larger separate adapter(actually just a short section of hose), its a direct fit. Thought others here may appreciate the explaination.
Hmm... Never knew that that was a question/concern people had. Mine came with the proper-sized gaskets, and everything just bolted right up. Glad you had the same experience!
Good news on the fit, but does it really do anything over say a K&N ?
SOTP feeling, dyno or other ? Now that I know it will fit, I'm interested.
I can't imagine it's any better than a K&N. The ONLY negative things I've heard about the K&N is from a buddy who had two conical filters on the ends of that split-off ("T-shaped") airbridge set-up. He was getting surging, and the car felt slower with the set-up. After talking to someone in-the-know, he learned that the T-shaped dual intake gizmo was probably making the air more turbulent (as it had to come together from two different directions, hit, and then go into the TB). He ditched the set-up for a Blackwing, and the problems went away.
Now, you've got to figure that it was the design of the intake, and NOT the K&N's, that caused the problems.
I think that K&N makes great filters. The Blackwing doesn't appear to be too different from a K&N.
