First let me say hi to the group, 1st post. I have an 02 Z06 Silver and I'm in Northern Virginia.
That said, I have 14K miles and I need some new tires ... badly.
I can't find any sort of defenitive sentiment about which are "the" tires to have for the Z06. I'm most interested in cornering as opposed to take-off grip or even wet performance (however, this is still for the street, so wet performance is a factor). I thought that I would go the Pilot route but found out this morning that Pilots in 265/40-17 have been discontinued, most of you probably already knew that. I was look at the PZeros and then decided that just asking this forum was probably the best idea. Who has what, and how happy are you with it. I'm reasonably happy with the F1s, but would like something a little more aggressive.
More agressive than the F1 supercar tires??? The only way you are going to get more agressive is to go to the Kumho Victoracer full tread racing tires...or perhaps the G-force Racing tires or Yokohama race tires 032 (I think is the number). The F1 tires are fantastic though. For all around wear rate and performance, you won't beat it!
The supercar tires are just short of full race compound so anything else will wear out in 3K miles because it WILL BE a full race compound. And OBTW, since the Kumhos (for instance) are a softer race compound, the tread will wear away and god help you if it rains.
Have you driven your Z on the track...is that why you wore them out so fast??? If you do drive it on track, I highly recommend you get another set of rims and rull race tires and save your F1 SC tires for the street! If you wore them out driving on the street that fast , you need to check your temperament on the road and work out some of those frustrations on a track! :D
Hmmm, I had thought that there were several street tires (Pilots, PZeros, etc.) that had better performance characteristics. So not that the F1s aren't good, I usually try to get the best of whatever is available. If the F1s are it than fine, they're fairly easy to come by in this area. I have had them brake loose several times, a few of which caught me a little off guard (most likely due to the lack of tread lately).
I agree that race tires should be handled completely seperately, I'm looking for strictly street application.
I have never driven my Z on the track although I'm thinking about it. I'm not the orginal owner, so you've now caused me a good deal of concern :) How many miles are people getting out of those tires? How about the clutch?

Check out some road tests of cars equipped with these tires - Porsches, and the Italian crown. Generally they do not make the essentially 1.0 g skidpad numbers that the Z06 will make with the F1s.
I would think that the owners of those other cars should be figuring out how they can get F1s for their cars.
The Pilot Sports and P-Zeros probably outperform the runflats on coupes and converts., but not the F1s on the Z06.
I am going through the same process as you. So far, I have got it down to GY,Eagle Supercar, F1's, Toyo T1S', and Michelin Pilot Sports.in that order. Any comments would be appreciated.
The only issue I had with GY,E,S,F1's WAS that it was 220 utog with the T1S' having 280 utog and Michelin having 220 utog. The F1's start with 8/32 and the above two, start with 10/32 in.
So far I have gone 24k on the F1's and have 6.5/32 left on the front and rear tires. So I have 4.5/32 till legal bald dom.
What's your timeframe look like? I'm hoping to do this sooner than later (I was actually trying to get this done Saturday, however I think I'll wait until I get a clearer picture now). You listed all the brands I'm familiar with, perhaps you hadn't heard that Pilots, of any type, aren't being manufactured in our front size. This is a fairly new development, you'll have to find Pilots in stock somewhere if you want to go down that road (pun inteneded  )
As long as you don't put the camber plates or put extreme camber on the Z, you should get 40-50K miles fairly easy...assuming you don't burn them up...track or otherwise.
You won't find a finer street tire than the F1 SC right now...except for the rain of course. They suck there!!!!

40-50K  Are we talking about a Hyundai or Corvette. I've driven nothing but sports cars for the last 14 years and never gotten anywhere close to that many miles on a set of tires. Maybe I really do have a lead foot. :D
Thanks for the welcom, BTW, this car is pretty unbelievable. I have a bit of a speed problem ... I own a 2000 Ninja Zx-12R that put me in jail for speeding for a day, so this car was my bright idea of how I could be more responsible :D
I jacked the car up over the weekend to look at the tread, where are you all taking the tread depth measurement from? The inside of the tread looked more worn than the outside did (could just be a visual thing though), I haven't actually measured it yet.
I had Pilot Sports on my 2000 Coupe. I didn't think they lived up to the hype. Now that I have the Z06, one of the things I am most impressed with are the F1 tires. They are far better than the Pilot Sports.
I don't know if the tire has been made that you couldn't break loose with this car.
Yoko builds a 275/40 front tire and a 295/35 rear tire in the AVS Sport. They used to be a little pricey but I have heard Yoko lowered the price. Until Michelin comes out with something to replace the ho-hum Pilot Sport, Yoko or Toyo may be the way to go if you're unhappy with the Gdy SC tire.
Just checked tread depth. With 7,100 miles the depth is 0.21 inches (approximately 6.7/32) all around. Broke the car in very gently and have been trying not to spin or slide.
I am planning to replace these at 25k or so. I think it is best to "retire" early to guard against a flat.
Gee, I don't really know. Around this neck of the woods I have really had a lot of fun driving this car! I also do my share of the twistys. (highway one, left coast N/S highway passing thru Monterey, Carmel, etc etc) This highway one goes clear up from Mexico to Oregon!
The measurement was taken at three points on each of the tires (total of 12 measurement points each done 3 times: inside middle outside.
My friend and neighbor (manufacturing engineer) with the caliper measuring device provided the conversion factors (6.5/32 as you know is not a real number) but since tires are measured in 32ths, I stuck with the convention.
The real thing you are looking for is: does the alignment work correctly. Obviously the measurements highlight the deficiencies.
Also the time frame in which I plan to do the change is when it gets close to bald.
Don't remember where I read it but there is a tire that pulled 1.06 g on a regular coupe. It think it was a Doug Rippie prepared corvette with coil over shocks and BFGs.
Yes, I seem to remember that was part of the fine print for a BFG advertisement. I wondered at the time why they didn't do the coil over shock conversion on the Z06 with BFG's. It would seem to me the Z06 could pull > 1.06g. (I would hate to think that the BFG is less sticky than the GY's
