Default what do i do?

This may seem stupid, but when I first got my car about a year ago I never had the steering wheel shake while driving fast. Well, I had to loosen the bolt that holds the steering wheel in order to lower it to get my aluminum bezels on for the gauges. I tightened it back up but now when i get to 60 or so the wheel shakes. My questions are

1- Do I need to tighten or loosen this more?

2- at what speed are you supposed to have this shake happen? is it normal?

3- any help would greatly be appreciated

Wheel shake is usually attributed to wheel balance....I'd have my wheels/tires balanced.

come to think of it, it got worse after i had my whole brake system re-done. could that be it, I know that they had all 4 wheels off the car?

Shouldn't make a difference unless they knocked a balancing weight off in the process. To start I would have the front tires checked and have all 4 balanced and see how it works.

The lug nuts should be torqued to 100 lb. ft. You should also consider a road force balance - but the burning question is what condition are your tires? Are they unevenly worn?

You've had the car 1 year - but how many miles are on tires?

If you are ready for new tires, just make sure that after you make purchase - that the lug nuts are properly tightened in a star pattern to 100 lb. ft., that the tires and wheels are road force balanced, and your shake should go away.

The steering wheel should not be shaking - if the nuts holding it in place are loose, tighten them up. Otherwise, I agree that usually it is a symptom of wheels out of balance. That may be something you need to get checked too.

You said you had to loosen the "bolt" that holds the steering wheel? Do you mean the 2 bolts that hold up the column?

yeah, at it's base, but I tightened them back up. I honestly didnt notice the shaking till after I had the brakes done. Thats the only time all 4 wheels have been off the car.

I agree with others that you should have your wheel balance checks. Since you said it is worse since you have you brakes worked on I would check the tire rotation to be sure they placed the wheels back on the correct side of the car. Swapping left/right, right/left could cause this symptom.

Thanks for all the help guys. I found out they did have to be balanced. only charged me 15 bucks too! And my front passenger rim is slightly bent. I planned on getting new ones come spring anyways, so I guess that was it. The shaking is gone though. Thanks to everyone who gave their input!
