A friend of mine just picked up a new to him 2004 Torch Red C5 coupe. The previous owner had installed some seat hoops and my friend wants to remove them. He asked me how they were installed as I installed some WCC Chrome seat hoops a few years ago.
I'm not sure who manufactured the hoops in my friend's coupe, however they look real cheap and don't look as nice as mine. (His words )
The interior carpet around the hoops is also wrecked so he plans to install some new carpet as well. It appears they were applied by epoxy only as he didn't see any screws.
However, before he starts ripping away at them, does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove them? I informed him of "Corvette Forum" and he plans to join, however I told him I would ask the masses for suggestions.
It's not going to be easy if they are glued in.I have thought about this before, and although I've never done it,I would try this.
I would use a hack saw blade slowly by hand, and I do mean literally by hand, starting at the bottom of the verticle part. Try not to get into the fiberglass,if possible. Once all the way up on both sides, you may have to cut horizontally into the hoop itself to get across the top and finally remove them.
If you mess up a little, you can always fiberglass it in,it gets covered anyway and doesn't need to be perfect, just close.
That's my best advice and how I would get 'er done.
If it is epoxy it's probably brittle and if you take a hammer and tap the metal around where it's glued, the vibration may crack the epoxy, freeing the hoop.
