I've followed threads on this section and the tech section regarding such filters as K & N, Blackwing and the like, compared to stock paper filters. Well today I got a big surprise.

In an effort to get to know my car, I was doing some tinkering and decided to see how the air filter system works and what the filter looked like. It was a Fram filter and when I pulled it out I could not believe the amount of sand, dirt, grit and other stuff that came with it. The filter paper was not "dirty" or greasing looking like some I've seen on other cars, but it sure had trapped a lot of stuff! Now mind you my car is right at 30K miles and this is the first time I've checked the filter since picking up the car at the dealer around Thanksgiving. (My mistake! )

If, as some have said, such filters like K&N let even a small fraction of that stuff through to the engine I can only imagine the effect over the life of the car.

Needless to say, I immediately went to AutoZone and picked up a new Fram filter!

On another note. Several have mentioned sections like "car care" and other special sections. Perhaps it has to do with my pitiful junior member status, but I don't see these sections on my forum list. Is there a magic place where they hide?

Yes, these cars are bottom feeders. They pick up a lot of crap off of the roads. I like to clean my filter couple times a year. That is why it helps having a reusable filter.

To get to the other forums, use the horizontal navigation at the top (red bar) and not the side navigation (left). Click on Forums and there you go.

ok, I'll ask....why not use the left side for other forums? I've always used the left side.

I use the left too, but his question was about forums that aren't listed there. You have to click on the Communitiy to bring them up or just use the Forum link on the horizontal navigation which is the quickest for me.

There are a few people who don't like FRAM products, either. They believe that WIX or AC DELCO are the best.

Use whatever you want to use in/on your car.

For some real entertainment, read the thread about ATF and power steering fluid being the same thing...

And you can click on the Corvette forum at the very top to take you to the main menu page of all sub forums.

Thanks folks...I found those other areas. I suppose I didn't look deep enough when I went there.

Much appreciated.

A Vararam doesnt feed from the bottom so it does not suck up all that road debris and sand etc.
