Default Important Question (oil)

So my car sits in a Storage unit for the winter, i start it about twice every month about. I just checked the oil, it was on Full line which isnt the problem, but it smelled like a hint of gas...is this because i havent drivin it and its just idling for like 10 min in the supa cold before i turn it back off, not giving it time to burn off or what not..i dont know much about NA cause my STI was turbod obviously and it would ALWAYS have a hint of gas. So if someone could go smell there dipsick that would be GREAT lol, because i cant get a straight answer, some people and tuners said its normal because its cold and im just sitting there idling and not moving so the unburnt gases get there and dont have time to burn out! but ive been doing this alot and the oil level isnt moving so thats good!! thanks again! on cold starts there is just always wierd smells lol bugs me!!

I wouldn't worry about changing it until its time to start driving it again, otherwise your gonna get all obsessive and end up changing the oil every two weeks.

but is that a normal smell when its in storage and you just let it idle for a bit close to warmed up then turn it off and do that twice a month hehe maybe more somtimes, could you get a gas smell on the dipstick? do to prob just driving it or giving it time to burn the gas off?

it's normal for oil to smell like gas, nothing to worry about, and just a FYI starting it twice a month for ten min is no good for the car. just let it sit till spring then fire it up. with out a good warm up and a 5 mile drive all you are doing is adding moisture to the crankcase. mine has been sitting since thanksgiving and i wont start it till it comes out of hibernation

This is not normal. You have a burned out fume reductor filter. This is a general service item that is usually done every 15k miles, but you must pull the heads to change it. There is one on each cylinder bank beneath the heads. If yours has been out for a while you most likely have fuel washed the cylinders and need a re-hone and re-ring (basically a rebuild.) Get a compression guage and check each cylinder; this will tell if you need a rebuild or not.

lol naw it is normal.. i think, my STI did it all the time aswell as my buddys cobra and cobalt SS so unless they all have this prob..i dont know! someone chime it! go smell your oil lol i think its just because im letting it sit and idle then turning it off and not driving it (cause its in sto) so no time for gas to burn

Can I ask why you start your car for 10 minutes twice a month? Seems like it would do more harm than good if you only leave it run for 10 minutes. I just got my Z last year and it's been in storage since November and I won't even SEE it until the snow melts. If you can't take her out and drive for a while, I'm not sure starting it for 10 minutes will do much good???

I agree on this point. I would want it to go through a couple heat cycles to allow the PVC system to work properly and burn the gas out of the oil. It probably smells like gas because the oil isn't getting hot enough to function like it should.

put a trickle charger on the battery and let her hibernate for the winter. She will be fine in the spring.

OK. I wan't to take a moment to appologize for my previous post. I was just foolin' and don't want to mislead anyone.

But on a personal and more serious note: I've been noticing a musky smell from my shorts after a hard days work. I think this may be due to unburned gasses also. Would some of you guys go smell your shorts and let me know if this is normal?

I start and run my Vette every couple of weeks and let it warm to full operating temp. Short of having a Canton or Moroso accusump for pre-oiling, I don't want to start a "dry" engine in the spring. Just my deal.
