Default 385 Vs 405

Why do the last year ZR1's have more HP than the first year ZO6's? It seems like going backwards as apposed to moving forward. Was there some logical reason such as a change in regulations or was it just another one of GM's illogical decisions?

If you are talking abt the C4 ZR1 compared to the C5 Z06, you are talking 2 entirely different animals. The Z06 engines were still the LS1 variety, but the ZR-1's were a joint venture with Lotus and were entirely different from the block up. Cant really compare the two.

If you read the history of the C5 and Z06 GM realized this but figured they didn't need to put any more horses in because it was already 'faster' than the ZR1 despite the HP difference.

Yes, I know of this joint venture with Lotus, I even know that the black Mercury Marine Engine even had more HP than the silver. However, the ZO6 was supposed to usher in the new era of performance and with that in mind, why wouldn’t GM have strived to surpass the (King of the Hill)?

Heck, it was only 20 HP and with over 5 years of technical advancements between the ZR1 and ZO6, GM could have added 20 HP with a more modern exhaust, intake and tune. Linginfelter and Callaway seemed to have figured that out.

Wow, GM must not have read the Road and Track test results comparing the two.

I’ve better get back on track before someone misunderstands. I would buy a ZO6 over a ZR1 but I am curious as to whether GM underrated the HP on the ZO6 or is there some other reason the ZR1 is still considered the King of the Hill?

Heck, I'm just a nuckle dragging, grunting and panting Car Guy and when I see 385 Vs 405 my nuckles tingle for the 405 but I do still know that there is more to speed than HP. lol

The LT5 was a piece of artwork like nothing before it and nothing since, including the LSx motors.

If the question is something that will keep you awake at night unless you have an answer, contact this member: "evil-twin". He was an engineer on the C5/Z06 Corvette. He is the ultimate source of information. The rest is just conjecture...

but with a $30K+ price tag, just for the engine upgrade it should be artwork.

I'll take the LS1, add a third of that to it and seriously outperform the LT5. AND you'll find people who can work on it for less than $1000/hr.

It was a fantastic piece of work at the time, and it did set the ZR-1 apart from the crowd, but the new ZR-1 is the new King of the Hill and heck you can get it for just a bit over $150K... !!!!!!! did I say $150K!!!!!

Geez, being the king of the hill is expensive..........................

The C4 ZR1 is not still considered King of the Hill.
A. It was King of the Hill of the C4's
B. It was only King of the Hill until the Viper came along and pushed it off
C. The C5 Z06 was/is a stronger/faster car with less power although the difference between the C4ZR1 and 01 C5Z06 is only 15hp. C4 was much heavier car so you would not feel those additional 15 hp but you would wish it were more as a C5 385hp Z06 ran away from you.
I like the C4ZR1 but the LT5 was overly complicated to get the same job done as the simplistic LSX's.

ok not to sound like captain obivious here, but GM corrected that in the following year on the 2002 Z06 by simply eliminating the pre-cats, using a less restrictive airbox, and a few other minor changes to yield 405 hp.

And if i remember correctly, when C4 ZR-1 first debuted, it only came with 385 hp.
