Default model year vs. build date?

If a model is represented as a certain year in the VIN no., is there any regulation about how late it can actually be built in the previous year? In other words, is there a specific time in the year when GM stops production on the currrent model and starts up on the next year model?

Its usually June or July when they start making the next model year.

I think the factory shuts down the first two weeks of July every year to retool and when they reopen they start building the next model year.

I seem to remember that the '05 C6 was built almost up to or maybe into September of '05 to get the production numbers up. But typically the current model year ends around the end of June and the production line ramps up and starts building in July.

My '01 Zo6 has an actual build date of September 5th, 2000.... but on the door jam the factory sticker says it was manufactured 08/00.

Go figure.

In recent years GM has moved the begining of a model year earlier and earlier in the calendar year. But Randy is right in that for the Vette, the typical start of a build year is in July.

My 03 was built 8/13/2002 and SN is 103830, so there where 3,829 built before then, & Mid July time frame sounds about right.

What does your door jam sticker say?

Mine says 08/00, but from build sheet records the true date is 09/05/00)

Are you just reading from the door jam sticker (like I used to think mine was 08/00) or do you know the exact date?

Thanks!!

Not quite sure what you are asking there? Did you maybe mean "How early in the previous year.......?"

My 2002 coupe was built 9/11/2001, my 2008 Z06 was built March 26, 2008....

An example to answer your question: As for how "late" in 2001 could my 2002 have been built that would have been Friday Dec 28 or Monday Dec 31 (if the plant was in operation on the 31st)

And My 2000 FRC was built 9/99. My 2000 also did not get the passenger airbag cut off button that evidently came later in 2000
