I stopped by a local speed shop and decided to pick up an Odyssey lightweight battery. Brought it home and it weighed in at 21lbs. The stock AC Delco weighed in at 34lbs. The Odyssey is shorter but about 1/8" wider because it's square all the way around. (Sorry no measurement to post at the moment). However, a little manipulating needed to be done with the stock tray. Here is a pic of both batteries. Clearly you can see there is quite a difference in size (and weight).
Dremeled out the back lip on the stock tray and it slipped right into place.
Battery faces backwards because of the location of the terminals. (You could face it forward, but you'd have to manipulate the pos/neg cables.) Only thing I really need is a longer bolt for the stopper since there is no lip on this battery. I believe the stopper will hold it in place securely enough since it sits nicely in the tray now. The car started right up no problem!
Be careful when tightening the cables on this battery. If they are still built the same, if you let the post spin when tightening, you'll break the connection internally. I had one of these on my raceboat & let the post spin a little. Then had trouble with the battery & the manufacturer told me I had let the post spin & broke it. This was about 7 or 8 years ago, hopefully they made some improvements.
That's fantastic. I wonder if anyone here has ever tried the Odyssey PC680. That one only weighs 15.4 lbs (680 amps).
I inquired about this one and the shop owner asked me "how many times are you going to start your car a day? More than once?" I replied "probably". He said "forget it then". I believe that one is basically a race-application only battery, otherwise you're taking your chances on weak starts or no-starts at all.
I also inquired about the Braille batteries and he didn't recommend them. He said that customers have had issues with them.
You're very welcome. I was told that this battery is the most popular one and is very reliable. Also has a 3 year shelf life with no charging.
3 years!! That beats the heck out of a Red Top!! Was not familiar with these batteries,,,How pricey are they compared to regular type replacements?? How about cranking amps? sorry to be so nosy,,but this has caught my interest!!
