The wife and I just bought each other a '04 vert for Valentine's Day on 2/13. The car is fully loaded (less the 12 disc CD changer) and has 50k miles on it. We paid $23k out the door for it. That gave me a purchase price of undr $21k. The dealer cried about how much money he was loosing, but that was not my problem.
There are a lot of thesecars out there, just check Autotrader.com. Fiind one that has been sitting on the lot for a while and dig into them. Heck I know of a nice looking '04 SGM vert in MA just waiting to be bought. You know people aren't looking at it with these storms happening. They have had the car since autumn.

The convertible will have a lot less storage space than the coupe. Just depends on how much luggage you plan to take with you on a trip. Best bet is to just find an example of a coupe and vert and figure out which will work for your needs.
As long as the car is mechanically sound (can a question mark when buying used), it should be very reliable on a trip. I've taken mine on long trips before with no problems, great gas mileage, and a heck of a lot of fun.
