I was reminded today about Corvettes, cold tires and cold roads when I stepped on the gas a little too hard while turning a corner. The back end of the car came around and almost hit the car next to me. I wasn't going very fast either. It never would have happened in warm weather.
Let's all keep it in mind and be careful this time of year. I'm sure I will now!
Did the traction control and active handling step in and try to help? You would of felt them take over as well as seen a message in the DIC stating they were activated.
because of the freezing night temperatures the pavement fails to retain heat - with high performance tires they freeze up and are hard like ice *****, its one of the biggest reasons my car is still parked for the winter, Dont worry i think most of us have had similar "incidents" lucky you saved it
I have talked with the tire dealers about high performance summer tires in cold weather. They basically say the tires will start losing their traction around 50 F and lose more traction the colder it gets. On the BF Goodrich site the blurb on their high performance tires says they are not meant to be driven in temperatures below 40 F.
If you want to drive in cold weather either be careful or put on all season tires.
lol.....i completely spun my c5 around about 3-4 weeks ago.decided to try a little 'fast and the furious tokyo drift' .turned off the traction control and hit the gas a bit to much....yeah, the car showed me it's *** ...cars were looking at me like 'wtf'...just started the car and got my *** out of there
About 3.5 years ago, shortly after I bought my C5 and not knowing any better, I had a "near miss" on a freeway and I have treated this car with much respect ever since. I was trying to pass a slow truck on the freeway... I dropped down to second while do around 45 (I can't remember exactly how fast I was going but it was not full freeway speed). I gas'ed it and before I knew it, I started fish tailing. I am one lucky person that nobody was to the immediate right or left me or I would have hit them for sure. The whole thing was really dumb and I have never shared it here until now. Even with a new set of rear sticky tires last, I totally give respect to this car.
