Its amazing to me the people you run into at dealerships. Its even more amazing to me the people you find out dont know anything about Corvettes. I was at the dealer last week to get an oil change and take advantage of the gorgeous day last week. Im waiting in line for the dealer to open up, third in line, only vette, when this guy , im guessing about 40 ,pulls in behind me in a brand new Camaro SS, black-black int. Beautiful car. We pull in the shop give the info to the service advisor, and sit in the waiting room. The guy with the Camaro comes in right behind me and we get into a conversation about our cars. Now without getting into the performance of the cars, this guy starts telling me how FINALLY the Camaro is FASTER than a ZO6. So of course,im thinking this guy is kidding and the more we talk the more I hes serious. So I ask him how do you figure that ? Well, he tells me for one thing ,the salesman told him that he sold 4 SS Camaros to former C5 ZO6 owners, who traded their cars for camaros (Not f****** likely), and second he read it in a car magazine. I asked him to tell me what magazine he read it in , and he said that he couldnt remember. I told him that I have $50 bucks in my pocket that I would bet him if he would go home and get the magazine and meet me at the Dunkin Donuts up the street. I was willing to wait the 30-40 mins for him to come back. I think at this moment, it suddenly occured to him that trying to "punk" me wasnt a good idea. Then he reluctantly tells me that hes never owned a vette. I tell him that even with a standard C5, he would be hard pressed to outrun one of those, even driving an SS. I guess the salesman saw this guy coming. I thought Id share.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — GM engineers at today's official 2010 Chevrolet Camaro unveil were all too willing to provide performance numbers for their hot, new muscle car, including quarter-mile and 0-60-mph times.
Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for GM's North American rear-wheel-drive platform and owner of a first-generation Camaro convertible, was pleased to run through his baby's accomplishments.
According to Oppenheiser, the new 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6-equipped Camaro will run from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds regardless of transmission choice. The V6 coupe will cover the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds with an auto and 14.7 seconds with a manual, both at 97 mph. The brakes don't sound quite as impressive, though, as Oppenheiser said the base Camaro stops from 60 to zero mph in 132 feet.
Not surprisingly, the V8-equipped Camaro SS delivers better numbers across the board. Chevy's Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph according to Oppenheiser. Strangely enough, Oppenheiser also claims that the automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds. "We optimized the shift points," he said.
Both versions of the V8 Camaro SS pull a maximum 0.90 g on the skid pad. Four-piston Brembo brakes help stop the Camaro SS in 117 feet.
What this means to you: If Chevrolet's numbers pan out, the Camaro SS will be every bit as fast as the Dodge Challenger SRT8 for a lot less money. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor
I wear those cars out every chance i get.. A true "tool" you ran into there.. Did his shirt snap? I have actually owned every generation(except 5thgen) of Camaro Z28,SS,to include an 89 IROC.. none of them except my 2000 H/C/I, big stall would touch my Z06...
Personally, the 5thgen does absolutely nothing for me... you should have offered him that $50.00 to run you on the hwy.. ( with NO other vehicles around ofcourse)

Same STICKER price as the SRT8 around here plus the challenger looks better. They aint selling at sticker either.
As much as I like both cars, neither is coming around a C5Z06 with good tires.

Last year I had a guy tell me that he put an engine from a 1984 Corvette into his ford pickup, and that he afterwards was able to get that truck to 200 mph...

So, did you get your oil changed?
Your HCI, stalled LS1 camaro isn't as fast as your stock Z06? I had a 01 SS with a GM hotcam, intake and exhaust that ran neck to neck with Z06s.. in a straight line of course.
The guy probably isn't worth worrying about.. as long as you called him on it in some form (which you did), that's about all you need to do
FYI
I ran a brand new SS in my daily driver (on a closed course )
and won by about a car going 65-120mph. I was in a 300c SRT8. I can assure you my 02 Z06 is much faster
You know the beauty of owning a Z06 is you don't need to brag or put down other people's cars to know you've got a good piece.
I've got a co-worker who just bought a 2010 SS Camaro. He's already asked me what HP my car has and was quick to point out his Camaro has a bigger engine with more HP. He actually said 465hp and I said "that's cool". I couldn't be bothered to correct his HP numbers. A couple days later he asked me what will my car do in the 1/4 mile. I said if I don't screw up maybe mid-12 second range. He said "Really!...." silence. I smiled and walked away. He's learning about Corvettes now.
I have a cherry 72 Camaro with a 383 stroker which is close to 500hp and I will take my 02 Z06 everyday. I've owned many hot cars and many more I have drove and my Z06 is nasty fast.
Well i did get my oil changed and he was looking pretty weird for the time we were there waiting. I also have owned 7 Camaros, from a 71 Z28, to a 79 Z28, to a 84 H.O. to a 98 Z28. All were stupid fast for what they were at the time in stock condition. But they werent as fast as the Corvettes were at those points in time. And every Camaro owner not only always wanted a Corvette, but also knew the Camaros werent as fast. Most were probably knowledgeable enough to know what they were talking about in a similar conversation. Now if he had the model GM is considering---a Z28 with the C6 ZO6 engine, I would be smart enough to keep my mouth shut or nod in agreement.
We have all run across these types of folks who enjoy participating in bench racing and wishful thinking. My 04 & 08 Z06s are not even in the same class as a Camaro SS, thankfully. The heavy/ugly Camaro SS will surely find its own way - just not into my garage.
HAHA... I showed up to a car club I used to be in with my 02 Z06 and 3 guys with brand new unmodded 5th gen SS Camaros wanted to run me saying that they're sure they're faster. I said "Look, my car will run mid to bottom 12s. If you really think your cars with 1000 Lbs and and only 10HP more than my car will REALLY run faster than my car, we'll go, but your cars are bottom 13 second cars and it's likely not worth risking the car or a ticket over something we already know the outcome for." That kind of confused them because they don't know too much about cars and said "But we have 430HP." I said, "And? I have 420HP and my car weighs a full 1000Lbs less. That's like giving me 100HP over you."
Needless to say, they didn't back down until the club president explained it to them in "simple" terms. LOL

When I was 24 and I could for the first time afford a new car, instead of buying a new Firehawk I went with a 5 year old C4 6spd. Never did buy a new F-body but I had a used V6. The C4 had 300hp and still did run 13.3 in the 1/4 several times, with no better than a 1.96 60' ft on street tires (no DR).
Today I'm 36 and still haven't purchased a car without pop-up headlights.
Yea, I had some tool in an SRT8 magnum pull up next to me and start jumping on the throttle and letting off repeatedly, but my lane of heavy traffic was doing about 1mph more than his so I ended up pulling on him, there was no way he could keep up

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
