Went outside through the garage to get my mail and noticed water and anti-freeze on the floor under the vette. I'd notice a faint squeel from under the hood the day before, so i figured the water pump was heading south on me. I then raised the hood and sure enough i could see that it was indeed leaking from the water pump. So i called the local dealership. They tell me it's gonna cost me $725.00 to change it. After the initial shock, i told them no thanks, i'll just do it my self. I then called a local vette specialty shop to see if they had the pump. They didn't have one but said they could have one there in an hour, and the cost was $310.00. Easiest water pump change out i ever did. Sure beats paying what the dealer wanted.

Hmmm... Well, $725 actually doesn't sound that bad for them doing all the work. I think they put a water pump install at 3 hours. They probably get the pump for $120, but would still charge you the ridiculous cost of $400 (easily) for the pump alone. I'd have to say that this sounds about right. Of course, if you can do it yourself, it's easier (and cheaper) to get yourself a Chevy mechanics suit and go to your local AC Delco vendor and get a pump at 10% + cost. I used to do this all the time after I worked for Rydell (until they found I quit... LOL). But for $725 I think you could get a brand new electric water pump!
I also agree with Vegas Vette that $310 is still a bit pricey for a pump.

I recently at the same issue for my DD. The dealership wanted to charge me $900 to replace my window regulators in my 04 Grand Cherokee. The MOPAR regulators ran anywhere from $225 to $260 when I priced them.
Instead I bought second party replacement parts (probably built at the same factory) for a grand total of $90 and replaced them in about 1 1/2 hours (2-hours if you include the beer break).
