Making a partition
First I made a rough pattern for the partition using heavy brown paper. If it is cut too short somewhere it is easy to tape on more paper and recut it. When I was satisfied with the paper pattern I made one from heavy cardboard and adjusted the pattern for a perfect fit.
Then I got a piece of 12 inch MDF, 1/2 inch thick. I cut it out using the heavy cardboard as the pattern. I then put it in place and then made any adjustments as needed. I needed to add a small strip along the bottom to make it tall enough. When it was a relatively tight fit I covered it with Corvette carpet, front, top, bottom and back, using a spray glue. It ended up being a nice tight push in fit with nothing needed to hold it in place.
With the partition in place I measured how big the storage tray would be and made a pattern from cardboard. I supported it with 2X4s underneath as that was what I would be using for the structure of the storage tray. I wanted mine deep enough to be useful. When I was satisfied with the pattern of the top of the storage tray I cut it out of plywood and screwed the plywood onto the base (easy to take apart if you need to change something). I then covered the top and all exposed vertical surfaces with Corvette carpeting, using spray glue.
When it was finished it fit in its spot very snugly. It has two cup holders, a storage area for CDs, a small area in the front center for miscellaneous items and two larger storage areas on each end. So far it has worked great.
