All you want is something to fit in the cutout in the rocker panel that raises the car before the jack hits the rocker. It really doesn't matter what it's made of, even though the hard rubber ones seem to be a little easier on the surfaces than the aluminum or metal ones and less likely to allow the jack to slip. Most jacks will fit into that cutout anyway if you're careful, but if you need to raise it with a lift, you'll feel more comfortable with four pucks in place. No more than I raise the car, I don't want the type that are designed to stay in place, though many who lift their cars a lot prefer those. The overall answer to your question is, it doesn't really matter as long as they are thick enough to keep the rocker panel safe.

The best way to go in my opinion is getting the Elite Engineering rail savers with built in pucks, The C5 is so low you will get protection for the full rails and have the pucks always installed.
Left the house the other day to go install the Vararam. I keep the car in another garage. Forgot the lifting puck that I made. Didn't feel like going all the home. Bought a roll of electrical tape. Worked fine in a pinch.

Also provide excellent protection when you bottom out.
The Elite Engineering pucks are very good. I chose to go with a set of BMW lifting pucks - fit right in and will stay put while driving the car.
Which BMW model are the lifting pucks for - I tried the BMW site and they asked which model and I wasn't sure if they were different for each model or the same. Also, what's the cost of the BMW pucks.
I've got the C6 in position on my Benkpak XPR-10ACX 2 post asymmetric lift and have a set of the BMW pucks in place. I think I have it lined up to where the center of gravity is between the posts, and this puts the front arms perpendicular to the line of the car, meaning they are both pointing straight in towards the center. As best I can tell, if I try to engage the lift, the outer sleeve of the front arms will contact the front fender body panels before the extended arm will contact the pucks. The rear arms look OK, but without an additional 1 inch space on the pucks (the BMW pucks are a half inch thick), I'm going to wind up damaging those fenders BIG TIME.
My C5 is in the shop getting a drivetrain replacement, so I can't try that one quite yet. I believe the C6 is slightly wider than the C5, so it might be OK. But still, I want to use the lift on both of them...
Does anyone have lifting pucks that are 1.5 inches thick? This looks like what I'm going to need to lift the C6.
