Default New Gremlin!?!?!?

Went to start the Vette this morning and all seemed normal until I turned the key.....NOTHING!!!!! No starter click or anything. Radio worked, lights worked, just not even trying to start. Turned the key a couple of time with the same result. Stopped trying long enough to utter a few choice words and wonder how much this is gonna cost me, tried again and it starts like normal. I got to work, turned it off and restarted, no probs.

What gives??? Anyone have ideas?

Will check that, but wouldn't that affect the radio and such also?

Thats my guess to. I had this happen to a friend and all we did was turn the cable adapter and started right up.

Is it a 6 speed? If you don't have the clutch all the way down, sometimes it does that. If it's an auto then I agree with dirty battery contacts suggestions.

Thanks All!!!! I'll be checking those connections in the am. Storming here in the ATL right now. Will also get some contact cleaner for the key. By the way, its a 02 vert, so could the anti theft chip on the key be going bad. How can I check for this possiblilty?

If you have another key try it. This happened to me and I had it towed and checked out only to find out the chip was bad. My other set of keys would have worked. live and learn.

If its an auto, check the obvious too and make sure its all the way in park or try it in neutral.

I just had this happen to me recently.

The plastic piece surrounding your ignition key hole is part of the seucity system. If it gets knocked around or out of place, the car thinks it's being hot-wired and will not start. Verify the plastic is correctly aligned with the proper key positions and not loose. if the piece is loose you may haveto remove the center consol section and see what broke.

To check your the key all you need is a DVM Digital Volt Meter. Put the probes on either side of the little chip and measure it's resistance. Then compare it to your other key. Below are the different values of all the keys used for the car. Also their acceptable tolerances.

The 15 resistor codes are:
Key# Value (Ohms)
1 - 392
2 - 523
3 - 681
4 - 887
5 - 1130
6 - 1470
7 - 1870
8 - 2370
9 - 3010
10 - 3740
11 - 4750
12 - 6040
13 - 7500
14 - 9530
15 - 11800

Resistance Value (Ohms)

1 - 0.402 (acceptable range .386-.438)

2 - 0.523 (acceptable range .502-.564)

3 - 0.681 (acceptable range .650-.728)

4 - 0.887 (acceptable range .850-.942)

5 - 1.130 (acceptable range 1.085-1.195)

6 - 1.470 (acceptable range 1.411-1.549)

7 - 1.870 (acceptable range 1.795-1.965)

8 - 2.370 (acceptable range 2.275-2.485)

9 - 3.010 (acceptable range 2.890-3.150)

10 - 3.740 (acceptable range 3.590-3.910)

11 - 4.750 (acceptable range 4.560-4.960)

12 - 6.040 (acceptable range 5.798-6.302)

13 - 7.500 (acceptable range 7.200-7.820)

14 - 9.530 (acceptable range 9.149-9.931)

15 - 11.801 (acceptable range 11.320-12.290)

I have a 2001 coupe. Just checked the ohm readings on both of my keys and they read 375. Where do you find the key #?

I guess it depends on where that "point" mark is. And if you are a little off, it might mean that your meter needs calibration. You could check your meter with a known value like a resistor. But they too have been known to be wrong. But if you have several of the same value you should be OK.
