I was reading the best corvette mpg thread and realized that I get horrible mileage, how can I imrpoce my gas mileage. I have a stock 04 auto with 2.73 gears??? 70% driving in the city, geting bout 13.5 mpg
As it has been stated in this thread, 13.5 MPG for an AVERAGE is just fine in a lot of stop and go.
Are you just looking at the average on the DIC? Mine is about 15-18 MPG.
If you look at the instant while driving on the highway you'll be around 26-30 while cruising on the highway.
Shift up early, not too early though, coast to lights and pull away slowly.
The fact that our cars have great mileage for being what they are is a bonus. Lets face it, these things aren't economy cars. As far as you getting better gas mileage, I think your calculations are wrong. How did you even get that figure? The best way to do it is to take an average over a period of time of how many miles you get to a full tank of gas. I bet if you do this you find out that your mileage is right on the money, assuming of course that you treat the vette with respect.
Change your air filter and recalculate and i'll bet your math is going to show a big difference. I normally get around 16 to 18 around town and it drops a little in in heavy stop and go traffic.
Why dont you take it to Chuck Cow or if its to much of a haul for you I would suggest his mail order tune. For an auto the performance increase will be awesome and the mileage will improve. I had Chuck install 3:42's, AR Headers, VaraRam, and a few other goodies and I'm getting 27/28 on the highway. I also have an auto and the original gears were 2:73. Car rus phenominal! Cow will do you right! Its the best bucks I have ever spent on my vette!
I also have auto, 2:73, but get 23+ in town, 31+ highway per DIC, with 24K on odometer. I leave it in "Drive" and let the car do the work. "Shifting" the auto will lower gas mileage. I run clean filters, keep tires at 32#, and use Mobil 1 per owner's manual.

When tuned properly and proper performance parts are selected carefully, you can make your car much faster AND improve the mileage....
Call me...If you're local we can do some really cool stuff.
If you're not local I might suggest a mail order tune....
Yeah a whole lost of stop and go driving, my town is filled with traffic lights, car is a 04 and just got 16k miles on it. I am getting the 13.5 MPG avg from the DIC, I use 93 gas.
Can a new Air filter and CAI help my MPG??
You cannot go by the DIC. As it is affected by your tune.
Fill up the car, drive it down to about a quarter of tank and then re-fill. Use the old method of dividing miles by gallons and see what your true mileage is.
I have a 2001 DD A4 2.73 43,000 miles. I always got about 17-18 mpg stop and go city for 8 years. I had a new LS1 engine installed 1-1/2 years ago (under warranty) and the city mpg dropped immediately to 15mpg. Got my PCM tuned last December, I am now down to 13.5 - 14.3mpg?
New oil, new air cleaner, always Chevron 93 octane.
Car runs/idles great, but someting is not right to be down 4-5mpg?

Dude,
Something is terribly wrong...unless you are street racing, have a leadfoot or whatever... you should get way better that that. My stock 03 A4 Vert gets no less than 19 around town; 23 mixed and 28+ Highway (calculated--not DIC). A while back I drove from Boise to McCall (2600' elevation to 5400' elevation) and back again and got over 29mpg--with the top down!!
Love the C5 Vert!!

In my intake/exhaust 6 speed if i set the cruise around 40mph i get between 38-42 mpg
on a level road! I reset my average fuel economy and at that rate I could get over 800 miles per tank haha.
If you have original plugs,,get some GM red wires and some Delco Iridium plugs(.040 gap)!! This COULD be a start. Add a couple of extra pounds air in tires and develop a light foot!!
