Default Speed difference in model years

Good morning. Had my vette for about 2 months. Research has shown that in 2001 Chevy went to a different camshaft an intake manifold. Does that mean that the 2001-2004 cars are a little faster than the earlier models? Vettes are nice!!

Depands on what you mean by fast. If you mean top speed fast, the factory computer parameters limit rpm's and fuel, so, gearing and tire height set the limits in the top speed catagory comparing oem to oem.

The intake gives a bit of improvement but the cam in the LS1 was I believe a truck cam that gave more low speed grunt/torque. Apples to apples comparo, the newer model should be a little quicker from a standing start or low speed roll.

I do not have the numbers to back it up,,,but I recall from what I've read that the cam change was to help cover for the extra exhaust restriction that came from the addition of the well known "pup" cats. These are the smaller cats in front of the larger main cats. Now also from what I've read,,2000 vets got the cam,,but only California and northeast(like New York New Jersey etc.) got the pups. This reportedly gave the vets for the rest of the country a few extra ponies,,but not enough to make a noticeable difference!! If you want a real difference,,going to have to do some mods!! Speed cost money,,,how fast do you want to go??

In 2001 the 385hp LS6 was introduced. The new LS6 had a new block casting that was shared with the LS1, a modified air cleaner, a new intake and exhaust manifold that were both shared with the LS1, a unique cam profile, higher rate valve springs, new heads, higher capacity injectors and a new PCV system that reduced manifold pressure.

In 2002, the LS6 was rated at 405hp, and the LS1 was rated at 350hp, up from 345hp. Also - torque for the LS1 was raised to 350 lb ft with the automatic and 375 lb ft for the MN6 from 345 lb ft on the earlier LS1's.

So to answer your question - the later models would feel faster/more powerful....because they were, slightly.

The LS1 horsepower change from 345hp to 350hp occured with the 2001 model year.

I think there was a slight improvement in 0-60 time between the 97-00 cars and the '01-04 cars (LS1 engine). Wasn't much but every little bit helps.

Of all the C5s (not counting Z06s), 1997-2004, the 2000 cam was the hottest. That being said, it was still not what you would call really strong, just better than all the rest. Personally, I don't believe there's more than a slight performance difference between the stock C5s. It's why we mod.

The torque difference is what is noticeable though -- more "average" horsepower throughout the rev range...
