Default Tire Sensor Question

I am replacing my tires next month on my 2000. I was told that I should replace the tire sensors. They seem to be working fine at this point in time. Should I spend the $400 ?

There is no need to spend $400. Call Bob at Fichtner Chevrolet, Laurel, MT. Fichtner is a Supporting Forum dealer and parts vendor. Bob will get them for you at the best price and he'll get them to you quickly.

Be sure to mention the Corvetteforum when/if you call.

I just had the batteries replaced in mine at a fraction of the cost of new. I had them back a week after I sent them.

I believe the 2000 C5 have the new, cheaper sensors ... they're pretty reasonable and I would replace them with new ones and sell off your old ones. It doesn't make much sense $ wise to take them out ahead of time and have them re-built.

I have a 99 C5 which have the older more expensive sensors, they still work and yes it would cost me close to $400 to replace them if I buy them new. There's a rebuilt service that's cheaper but I'm gonna wait till they die before deciding.

$400ish is the going price for 97-2000 OEM sensors, you can find some generics in the $300 range though... Someone also posted that the Schrader-Bridgeport #28006 was only $50 some odd bucks at Costco, and that is supposed to be compadible with 97-2000... I looked around and even the 28006 appears to be around $75-$100 bucks at most places, if Costco truely has them for $50 that is a steal...

In the end $400 is a little costly since they are probably generics, but not really that far out of line...

If it were me, considering that the car is 10 years old, I would go ahead and replace them now - chances are if you don't you will end up having to break the tires down again before long.

And the '00 has the more expensive sensor - the cheaper version did not appear until the '01 model year.

I'm new to this TPMS stuff.. What's the downside of not replacing them? (other than no signal)... Does it create a constant headache from never-ending warnings?

What if you just got rid of them altogether? (with the understanding of the potential of being stranded)...

It's just that I'm prettty good about watching tread-wear and monitoring inflation the old-fashioned way... And I would carry a road-side assistance coverage..

Yes unless you get it tuned out of the computer the DIC will report a tire system monitor malfunciton every time you hit 15-20mph after a fresh start of the car, so you need to hit reset to return to your normal DIC display...

I just put new tires on my 2000 and the installer called to say he'd install the sensors for $400. I never missed the fact they weren't on the car when I bought it. I hit the reset button after I start it up and forget about it. I check the tire pressures the old fashioned way. Not worth it to me.

Can anyone confirm that the older sensors for a 99 are cheap at Costco. Schrader-Bridgeport is the OEM for the early C5s sensors so that would be great. Has anyone ever bought and used the Costco sensors, I keep hearing rumors but no one has ever confirmed it on this forum.

Thanks, Jerry

I just recently made the complete changeover over to the late model (01+) versions and they are working great. Got all my parts from Gene at GMpartshouse.

That is kinda what I figured since they average about $75+ online...

So you wll save about $30-$40 with the generics over OEM, and the $400 price tag holds true...
