Default Saying hello... newbie.

I've been shadowing the forums for about a month and decided to jump in and join up. First off I do not have a corvette yet. Of course "yet" being the keyword. My name is Kevin and i'm a SSG in the US army hence the user name lol. Currently I am on my 3rd deployment to Iraq and decided this time I was going to get what I wanted. My 1st I got a bike 2005 ZX6R and the 2nd I got my wife a house. Well whats the point of having a 2 car garage if all you got is a Tahoe and a beater truck?? I'm 29 and will be turning 30 here in Iraq, so its another reason to get a corvette. Kind of like a mid to my mid life crisis is how i worded it to my wife. haha. What i'm looking for is a 99-01 C5 and i'm torn for now between getting the coupe with the targa or going with a vert. Has to have a 6 speed color is no real matter as i'll just get it painted if i dont like it. I would also like to have the HUD not sure if its something that has to come stock or if its something i could add later. My price range for now is between 10,000 low and 14,500 high. Figure i have quite a few months to search for one but at the same time it kind of sucks because if i were to find one i'm kind of not in a position to buy it until next year sometime. Anyway, wanted to say hello to everyone, and I look forward to gathering lots of intel from everyone here and maybe even buying my car from one of you guys when the time comes.

v/r

Welcome aboard Kevin.

You're in luck, it's a buyers market for vettes right now. Be patient and get the car equipped just the way you want it. I looked for about 18 months before my 'perfect' vette came along.

Again, welcome to the forum!

Get at least a 2001, the 2nd Generation C5 as the improvements are worth it though you would get more car in a 97-2000.

From 2002-on, all got the HUD standard.

If you want the HUD, find a car that already has it, it is awesome! I had to have it. I also had to have the telescoping wheel and power seats, thankfully my 2001 came loaded, ahhhhh.

If you are thinking of a convertible as you don't mind the wind noise or any noise at all, get it. I sort of regretting not getting it but I commute year round but would have loved to have it.

You have between $10-14,500K, make sure you like the color as paint jobs are expensive.

HUD for me was a must have.

2001 was the last year for Navy Blue Metallic, the light oak interior is also the BEST!

I remember seeing a Ferrari F380 or a F430 with the dark blue and tan interior and was in love.

Yes, 2001+ was GenII and the changes were/are worthwhile.

Hi Sarge,

I wouldn't necessarily buy into this 2nd generation bias on the C5... the differences between the early C5s and the later ones is nominal in my opinion. The later ones have some minor refinements sure but nothing really to get too excited about. The overall condition of the car should be your main concern and don't be afraid of a car that has some miles if taken care of.

If HUD is something you feel ya gotta have, go for it but I wouldn't walk away from a car that did not have it. I think you should really zero in on a couple of colors you want and forget the idea of repainting a C5 as this cost is too prohibitive. You also need to decide on a
coupe or a vert...I've had both and they're more positives for a coupe in a C5. On a C5, a convertible looks pretty lame with the top up, top
down is another story!

Good luck and keep your head down.

Jerry

Welcome to CF and thanks for your service.

Just noticed this comment. "Has to have a 6 speed "

Best of luck finding that in a convertible.
