I went to a place like the saltflats, It is called the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada.

the wife and I drove from edmonton to san francisco and back. on the way home we went through reno (and didn't even call mr bill 
) and took a detour to check out bonneville. It was really cool. she was pregnant at the time so she hung out on the pavement (with another lady and 2 kids) while I went out on the salt. I didn't do anything too crazy but I did get on it a bit and did some donuts

You might try the above link. They are an active group here in Utah with activities out at the flats in the fall of the year when the salt is usually at it's best.
