as the guy on Saturday night live used to say,
you have to wonder who the ad wizard that came up with this idea?
but change it to "wonder who was the engineering wizard that came up with that location."

Thanks for the post. I went to the sticky and found where others had used a round saw on drill. Both look like reasonable fixes to me. I would think with a round hole, some kind of standard size rubber plug could be installed to fill in, providing the curves will cooperate.

If I need to do this I'll call up your post to get an idea to start my cuts. Glad you retrieved the sensor.

WOW that is a big hole. I used a 3" hole saw and had plenty of room. Also used a piece of blue tape to hold the new sender to the socket while installing it.

And you can also replace the bank 2 A.I.R. check valve at the same time.

No holes for me.

So what do you use to remove the fuel lines ?

My understanding is that there's a GM tool you need to buy....

You do NOT have to remove the fuel line.

Happy to see that you were able to retrive the old oil sending unit. I would never cut...a holelike that. I think I'll pull the manifold instead.

What if I'm planning on swapping to an LS6 intake while I'm changing the oil sending unit ?

You still don't have to remove the fuel line.

It's really not necessary to remove the fuel line, but it makes it easier if you do.

No special GM tool is needed. I used this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=38732

Bookmarking this thread,,need to remember this tool!! To the OP,,,I've NEVER dropped anything like that down into the dark never regions of the motor compartment,,,you'll be drummed out of the shade tree mechanics club for admitting that!! Seriously,, anyone that works on their toys KNOWS your frustration,,,and feels your pain!! Often takes a lot longer trying to recover the item than takes to do the job!! Congrats on the retrieval,,and the successful completion of the change. I can sympathize with the frustration,,I'm getting ready to head out to my shop to start rapping up my dad's project. It started out as a simple rings and bearings on my dads 1946 Ford tractor 4 cylinder flat head motor. Turned into a 3 week full restoration of the motor with more curves thrown at us that a big league power hitter!! Glad the coat hanger worked for you!!

The LS1 intake seals to the heads with rubber o-rings that are re-usable. No need to even remove them, just leave them on the intake and reinstall it.

As my daughter would say - easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I like it! Good job...Great alternative solution and now the sensor can break as many times as it wants. Its like changfing a bulb. But yeah id use a hole saw right on top of the sensor for a cleaner install.

Isn't it a shame that GM didn't provide a small access panel in that location? So easy for them to have done.
