Default What are These???

Just purchased a 2002 Z06. Got home and started cleaning it--found these in the trunk in one of the wells. I have no idea what they are but they must be important since the first two owners saved them. Thanks;

They're the straps that hold the air filter lid on.

Thanks. I would have never figured that out. I haven't received my service manuals yet. Maybe there is a picture in there.

I would be looking to see what kind of air filter box was on the car and why these were not needed.

those are the straps for the stock air box lid. Previous owner probably did the zip tie mod.

James92 What is a zip tie mod? Looks like the air box is held in with zip ties. What is the advantage of this and does anyone have a picture of how the original metal air filter straps attach?

Thanks

Also called the flip tie mod

Flip the air filter so it gets cold air and hold it in with zipties

The end attachment points are most critical to maintain tension on the straps, keeping the upper lid and bottom base parts of the assembly clamped together. It should be obvious to you if you chose to re-install the air intake assembly as original.

If your car has a "flip tie" modification, you've undoubtedly got a large hole in your shroud that covers the radiator/condenser. You can either buy another shroud (new or used) or use thin black ABS to cover the hole. You'll also need the upper Z06 lid and the two clamping handles that put tension on those straps at the backside (MAF side) of the assembly.

This is what the oem assembly looks like as far as the mounting straps. My upper Z06 lid has been slightly modified, so yours won't look like this...

You should be able to see the curved edge clamping handles in this image on either side of the MAF...

Hotwheels57 thanks for your help. I understand that the housing cover is missing but I'm not sure about a hole in the shroud. Here are a couple of pictures of my air cleaner--don't see any holes--am I missing something. I just purchased the car and don't have the service manual so please excuse my ignorance. Thanks

Same car as me and same questions. Before I searched on here I thought the last owner broke part of the air box and used zip ties instead of trying to fix it.

That's not the "flip tie" mod. Looks like they just removed the top of the air box and lashed the filter element holder down with cable ties. That filter looks like it will need cleaning one of these days be SURE not to OVER oil it!!!

Anybody think water ingestion is a possible concern with this "set-up"???

Look like he just removed the air filter cover and didn't cut a hole in the radiator shroud.

Not much sense in cutting a large rectangular hole in the radiator shroud if the rest of the air box isn't "flipped" upside down?

Hey hotwheels57, first time no one has asked why your air bridge is plugged into the wall.

A previous owner evidently thought that removing the upper lid and leaving the filter media exposed would add more power. It would certainly make more noise, which is what many owners equate with power, anyway. It appears to be a K&N filter.

It not only doesn't look good left exposed in that manner, but the media has obviously been denied regular cleaning/fresh oiling maintenance. If it gets to clogged up, the computer could alter the fuel curve which would result in a change in performance and fuel economy.

It's not the "flip tie" modification where the upper lid is eliminated and the bottom base is flipped upside down over a hole in the shroud. That's the good news because you don't have a hole to deal with.

If you can find another oem Z06 top lid new or used, you can return the assembly back to original. The K&N can be cleaned and oiled as good as new. Or, decide on an after market intake of your choice. Only two after market will produce significant power, the "Honker" and the VARARAM.

The previous owner probably didn't want to deal with removing the assembly and re-doing the zip ties. Don't allow that filter to go that way for long. It could actually harm any power increases, real or imagined.

I originally installed a "Blackwing" and "Ice box cover" on my car. It's one of the more popular after market filters. But, at the altitude where I am, the filter gave me annoying intermittent codes. Only an expensive tune would have eliminated the problem, which I chose not to do. That's when I modified the original Z06/Z16 upper lid as shown. It sounds the same as the "Blackwing", looks almost oem and doesn't cause any codes. Plus it's 110v, but 220v would have been more efficient...

Assuming this is a K & N--how doyou clean and oil the filter. It can on the car--I don't have directions.

I would throw it in the trash and go with a stock set-up though I'm sure not many will agree...
