I wave at all generation vettes when we cross paths. When I had my C3 (about 10 yrs ago) all vettes I passed would wave too.

I have yet to see two motorcycles pass that didn't wave to each other.

To me it is a friendly greeting to all those who share the same love for the same type of vehicle.

I was driving home this afternoon on a 2 lane highway and saw a guy up ahead mowing... he kept mowing when the cars in front passed, but when he saw mine, he stopped mowing, smiled and as soon as I passed, he started mowing again just before the Pontiac Grand Am behind me a few lengths back reached him. I think she might have a little grass in her Grand Am's grill now.

Ditto, ditto, ditto, same happens to me when I drive it in Danville California on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The C5 with its targa top off driving on a nice road, this ride lights up not only me but everybody that see's it.. One time guys honked behind me when a Sr. man (in his 60s) driving a mini van, turned to me and said, "Beautiful ride son". I told him "SON", I'm 51 and my son is in the Army at Fort Hood, and this is my present to me for raising my son up being the best son in the world... We laughed and the cars behind us started honking to get along... He said, "I'm gonna start looking, I deserve a present too".. off we rode, both smiling and grinning... I love my vette... Enjoy the ride, I really do...

Used to happen to me when the Z06 was a year old. In Socal a Corvette isn't very special and although we wave to each other, I very rarely have anyone go out of their way to say anything now that the C5s are getting older.

In Socal expensive cars are a dime a dozen though. You go down to the local sandwich stop down the street from me and if there isn't an M5, E63 AMG, and Bentley parked out in front I would think it was weird.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade but sometimes for me I get a little embarrassed. I try to stay humble in general and absolutely love my car but I become speechless when others go out of their way to compliment my car. Like everyone else

Having said that, I truely love seeing children wave and tohear them say nice car. It induces a little nostalgia and excitement for making the little guy's day. Its different than when an adult compliments your car because you know the children have no sense of responsibility or to put it a better way, any commitments. There is nothing holding them back from getting their dream car which may not be the case for an adult for any variety of reasons.Thats why it feels a little more special when I see the look of awe in a little kid's face. Not only have I made his day,but he has mad mine!

Have to agree, the C6 crowd in general is a whole new animal! Just not the "Corvette" people I have known with every previous generation. I always wave to all the previous models as it brings back memories among other things, but most of the C6 drivers just stick their nose in the air and drive on. Even in person, they act like they are something special.

I guess that "logically" and "realistically" a Corvette is "just a car" - at least that is all they are to an insurance company or a bank. But I never bought ANY of my Corvettes as a sane or logical decision, it was always an "emotional" one.

How many "cars" do people run out and spend thousands of dollars upgrading immediately after they buy them "new"!

How many "cars" have so many companies that build only after market parts for and produce dedicated magazines around them.

How many "cars" do people buy for that much money and then never drive them?

How many "cars" have Forums with this kind of participation?

How many "cars" do you just not feel right driving if there is a speck of dirt on them?

The list goes on... but even when people search for a "used" Vette - look at the pain they go through trying to locate on the is just the right color with just the right options and then pay above book value for!

No... the Corvette is anything but "just a car"!

My car is showing my driving habits and also that I have been pretty busy, it needs a good long weekend to clean it.I put a new cam and cutouts recently and the car is loud and nasty when they are open. Its fun to watch the windows come down to hear it. I love the vette.

Forgive me for resurrecting an old thread, but I had to put my story in...

As if it wasn't cool enough that I was driving my very first Vette home on a cross-country trip from MI to TX with the wife, we stopped for just a minute in Oklahoma at a fast food joint. As I came out the people in the car next to me said the car was awesome and asked me if I would switch cars with them. I laughed and said "no".

Never heard that about my Grand Prix. Wonder why...

Excellent thread to resurrect, I think.

Just last week, I was at the gas station, in my C5. An older Chinese gentleman getting gas next to me, came over. He said (while smiling like a kid looking at my car), " is this a Ferrari?"
I asked him how he knew about a Ferrari? (note: I'm married to a Chinese girl, so I know many of these folks. Older Chinese folks grew up under Mao's Cultural Revolution, and in a different world than most of us can even imagine, and they know nothing about sports cars, for the most part.)
Anyway, this nice older man, said; 'my son has one of these. he a doctor" he proclaimed proudly.
I chatted with him, for several minutes and told him this was America's Sports Car, Corvette C5. He didn't care about the difference, until I told him my C5 was 11 (almost 12) years old. He looked at me, like I'd lost my mind. I actually didn't think he believed me, so I reached inside, grabbed the owners manual, and showed him. He was amazed, to be sure. For several minutes as we chatted, he walked around the car, looking at it from every angle, and never stopped smiling as we talked. Like a kid...

So, once again, C5 Corvette evokes emotion and respect from others, that no ordinary car usually does.
It is cool, and sometimes fun, to discuss my C5 with others, in this way. I always try to leave them wishing they had one, too!!!

Don

I have to thank you for resurrecting this 4 year old thread... Again, I have reread every post...There was not a single harsh word, or argument placed. A rarity in a thread that I am involved with. LOL.
The funny thing is that I started this thread four years ago and now , 4 years later.. Nothing has changed with the amount of compliments I still get or the interest and attention it still draws. I have recently been seriously offered an insane amount of money from two different people for a car that is 16 years old and has 100,000 miles on it.
Thanks again for renewing the interest in this thread.

Ive had people get pissed off at me, when I tell them its 15 years old and has 100,000 miles on it... As if I was pulling their leg.. I still get people asking me if its New. People who would not know a Corvette, from a Mustang. The only thing I can figure is that I keep my car as clean as a new car... I've even had people challenge me by saying things like , they didn't have touch screens and navigation 15 years ago... there is no way those wheels brakes and rotors are 15 years old.. The key to attention is a clean car.
It doesn't take much to bring these cars into the new technology age.

This is an old thread that is still a pleasure to read. It reminded me of an incident that was very cool a long time ago and a lot of fun. I had to stop at the local Walmart so I parked far from the entrance out in the parking lot boonies. Like happens to so many people, I come out and see in the distance a car parked next to me. As I'm walking back to my car, I'm getting more upset. I see people standing next to my car so now I'm getting really aggravated. I walk up to my car and see that it is a quite elderly couple. They are just standing there admiring my car. They start asking me about my car and don't believe me when I tell them it has in excess of 100k miles on it. They were complimenting me on the wheels (Classics) and how flawless the body was. The best part was that they started to tell me stories about that when they were much younger they owned a few Corvettes in the 50's and 60's, but now they are not agile enough to still be driving them. It was so nice and made my day to have such a nice conversation with Corvette admirers. I also was glad I started off polite, instead of with the attitude that was building up as I walked to my car.

C5's are just gorgeous cars, even stock.

One thing I've found interesting though... While women seem to drool over my Corvette, the men don't seem to notice my Vette, but if I'm in my Mustang... that's when the men stare, but that may also be because the Mustang's the only one camming it's butt off.

In fact, since I got the C5 a month and a half ago, I've got neighbors talking to me that have never said a word to me in the 4 years that I've been there.

I spend a lot of time in my yard, working on my cars, all of the neighbors stop by to talk, mostly about the Vette. I don't think there was a more beautiful car made than the C5 Convertible, but then again, I am somewhat biased. A few want to talk about the 73 Mustang too I admit, but don't hate me for it This weekend, with my car two feet in the air while I was working underneath it, several of the "regulars" stopped to chat, and two different times, people who were driving by stopped to look at my car. I had never seen them before in my life. This is not really an unusual circumstance. One time I caught a Mom with a boy about ten years old posing in front of my car taking pictures because he loved it so much. He had the biggest smile on his face as I let him sit in the drivers seat and his mom take his picture.

So not only do I get lots of compliments on my car, I finally get to meet many of my neighbors after living here for nearly 30 years.

Many people, neighbors, etc will comment on a new car.. the feedback is always nice after investing a lot of money in a new car.
The amazing thing and the point of this thread is that this C5 design is so timeless that even 15 years later, and 100,000 miles plus still brings that interest to many people.. You would be hard pressed to find another car that is this old by design to be accused of being New.
Not only do the comments never get old... neither does this timeless design... I don't know of another design team, that was ever able to deliver such a masterpiece of timeless design. The C5 was a clean sheet of paper, without any influence from another design.

Mine is a over 123,000 and still gets compliments. You are on it from the title, It Never Gets Old. I'm not one to take compliments well, so I just tell them, "Thank You." The compliments are a product of wanting something for 24 years, (from the time I was 14 till I was 38), and still loving it even after owning it 11 years.

to all who have wanted something badly and worked hard to fulfill their dreams. It doesn't matter if it was a C1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or the Red Rider BB gun you didn't get as a kid because your parents thought you would shoot your eye out, now you own a Barrett .50 to go along with your Red Rider.
