I will post with Pictures what I made out of foam, an a 3" mirrior, and it fits tight, no rocking or falling over, and when you don,t need it, toss it in the back, its foam.LOL
I made a mount out of a piece of 2 1/2" solid steel shaft. Painted it flat black....it works excellent without the plastic disk for the suction cup. I still have plenty of room for shifting through all the gears. It is heavy enough to hold the GPS steady.

Rod
Thanks Rod BUT can't see the mount in your pic - the GPS Screen is covering the mount. How did you mount the GPS to it if you didn't use a suction cup ? ..... Better pics please so we can all share your joy
ALSO Can you take pics of just the mount and how it is installed in and out of the car ?
I am assuming that you have to be a machinist or have access to a lathe in order to make the mount out of solid steel like you did ?
My method was intended to be accessible to "everyone" that can glue 2 pieces of plastic together.
10/4....i'll take a couple more photos tomorrow after work.
I still use the suction cup mount, but i just suction it to the painted steel without the plastic disc. And yes, I do have a friend who is a machinist.
I think your mount looks great. I was about to make one for my Tom Tom XXL 540s because I wasn't happy with the windshield mount and just for the hell of it I looked on Amazon.com and ebay and they carry a huge selection of GPS mounts. I ended up buying a mount that clips onto the AC vent on ebay for under $4 (that included shipping from Hong Cong, I don't know how they can sell it so cheap) and it works perfect.
Just a big 'ol hunk of iron stuck into the piece of rubber in the cup holder.....takes care of a 5" Garmin Nuvi just fine. I have a navigator in the right seat, so it works good for us, down low and out of site.
