Hey guys, looking to see what you recommend for a clutch for my 01 Z. The car has just under 70kmi on it and if any of you saw my other thread i am putting another trans in it this weekend. Well to the best of my knowledge it still has the stock clutch. Even though drivability is fine and it still grabs tight when i wanna blow the tires off, i might as well change it. My plans for the car aren't very wild. So far it has a cold air intake and catback corsa exhaust.
I plan on doing LG longtubes and catless X pipe. And possibly a cam down the road. Thats it. I was looking into the Zoom F2 clutch, but ship date from summitracing isnt until 4/22. I need something for the weekend because me and my buddy who is a gm tech are going to tackle the project then.
I put on the Monster stage 3 on my 01 Z last summer and it squeaks taking off from a stop, but it can take abuse at the dragstrip! It doesn't want to slip, its hard to launch and the pedal is stiffer than stock, but I like it. Last I heard, the stage 3.5 is the improved non-squeaky one to get.
Hey TurboTnZ06,
I just bought a 2002 Z06 with a monster 3.5 clutch and I have a question concerning drivetrain slop.
In stop and go traffic sometimes when I let out the clutch the car starts jerking back and forth and if I push in the clutch it stops. If I am cruising along in 6th and going too slow with the cruise it will surge again and I downshift it will go away. I do hear a slight clunking sound.
I am thinking something is wore somewhat at 66k like the tt couplers, etc... There appears to be some slop in the drivetrain.
Some people say this is normal.
What is your experience with the monster clutch?
How many miles do you have on the clutch? I just installed the monster stage 3 and have some clutch chatter. I was worried about that too so I called monster and they said it'd mostly go away after the clutch break in and if you have an aluminum flywheel that will amplyfy the chatter

Thanks to any help.
In my TA I ran a LS2 flywheel and LS7 clutch. Worked great. I had 410RWHP through a Strange 12bolt rear w/411 gears. When I replace the clutch in the Z06 will be going this combo.
I daily drive my '01 Z and it's got a textralia clutch. Once you get used to the way it operates, it's really very simple to daily plus is can handle the power and abuse at the track/on the street. I have absolutely no complaints with it.
Seems like the LS7 clutch should work pretty well w/ your plans. Just went with one for my 02 Z (basically stock), working great so far but I'm still within breakin. Had the LS7 clutch put on my 99 TA and ran that for a year or two, great daily driver clutch IMO.
I am in the process of contacting the previous owner of my car and ask him how long the monster clutch has been in the car. My problem is definitely not chatter.

I give it a couple hundred more rpms when using first or reverse and the hop is eliminated.
Also double check that the a-arms and the other rear suspension components are tight since all you have to do is remove the rear wheels to get to everything.
Thanks,
I called the chevy dealer and they said the corvette service manger would get back with me and schedule an appointment. That was yesterday and I certainly do not think much of this dealership.
I shall go over to my buddys shop and jack it up and remove the tires and check the drivetrain. How can you check the torque tube coupler slop? Would you leave the car in gear (Jacked up) and rock the half shaft back and forth and see how much slop you have?

Ya well, thats I have the stage 3 and it has never been a street friendly clutch. It makes the terrible and embarrasing squeek/rub stupid sound. I broke mine in just the way I was told. It does it to this day. The only way to clear it TEMPORARILY, is to drop the clutch at 2500-3000 rpm. Fine for a drag/race car or whatever, but NOT for a street driven DD. About a month after buying the stage 3, they came out with the stage 3.5 hmmm, I wonder why. I dont like that the clutch was sold to me on the premis that it "was just like stock"... Thats a giant pile of I have to do a clutch job again now because I was told mis information. $700+ wasted... plus the price of the new clutch

For what its worth I have installed several monster clutches in corvettes and have yet to have one make noise like that. Not saying you did anything wrong, just saying that every clutch manufacture has a few bad apples.

Good luck with you clutch replacement.
Its a pretty common occurance in Vettes and GTO's. As a matter of fact, I was sent a video (FROM THE SELLER OF THE CLUTCH)of a GTO making the exact same sound. I thought it was the throw out bearing. They sent the video to show me it was glazing onthe flywheel and thier the ones that told me how to get rid of it. Did you install stge 3 kits or something else?
I am geting better adjusted to the clutch and when you say LS7 clutch are you talking a C6 clutch? Will this clutch handle 500hp?
What is involved in replacing the clutch? can it be done with 10" ramps in front and jacking and supporting the back somewhat higher or is it better to do it with a lift?
Other then removing the wheels and disconnecting the half shafts and torque tube how much time should one figure?
