Default Shifter question

Is there anything attached to the ball at the bottom end of the shifter that goes into the box or is it just the steel ball.

There should be a black plastic (or nylon?) piece that pivots on the steel ball.

Is that something I can buy? I have a C6Z06 shifter to put in and would rather have a new or a spare in case the one on my shifter breaks.

GM does not sell the plastic bushing as a separate item. It only comes as part of the shifter assembly.

Did the C6 shifter not come complete with the housing?

Jebus......When I made the swap from the stock C5 shifter to the C6Z06 shifter, it was unbolt the stock unit, pull it out and insert the Z06 unit and bolt it down.

Couldn't have been any easier. Didnt have to fiddle with the internals of either box at all.

How did you get in the position of asking this question......did you buy a shifter in pieces? Maybe take something apart that didn't need to be disassembled?

We need more info...

I bought an '08 z06 shifter without the box, nor the plastic (or nylon) piece on the ball!!! Got a GREAT deal on it. The OP's "situation" is perfectly reasonable.

Coanan, I had no problem moving the plastic piece from my original stock shifter to the new shifter. Just be careful as it does take some force, and when mine popped off, it went behind my workbench...

Nice upgrade too...

Put a little grease on the ball end to help in snapping on the plastic bushing. It'll reduce the chances of breaking it during the R&R...

That would explain it!

Thanks everyone, I also bought a C6Z06 shifter without the plastic piece. I'll ask in the parts section if anyone has an extra not in use; I like to have a backup incase Murphy strikes.

You might direct your question towards anyone who's recently installed an MGW shifter. It's my understanding that MGW designed their shifter with a larger ball end which doesn't require the oem plastic bushing.

nylon bushing snaps onto the shifter end (onto the small ball end)

They sure did. You do not use the plastic bushing with the MGW shifter. The ball end already comes pre-greased with an MGW.

I still have my stocker lying around. It can't be used anymore. I said to hell with taking the demon key off and just cut the shaft.

If I can manage to get the bushing off without breaking it, I could send it to the OP.
